Strategies for Survival

My house is not the greatest when it comes to insulation (the 'rents had barely any maintenance done when they were alive). And we have lots of blankets and pillows, and cat food. My son is paranoid to a degree about water, so his fridge is loaded with rinsed-out-&-refilled soda bottles of various sizes.

You can put bubblewrap (the kind with the big bubbles) against the windows, and apparently it insulates better than the window film. Measure the window, cut the wrap to size, spray the window lightly with water and press the film bubble side on the window. Doesn’t look great, but effective, I’m told.

Or other vulnerable people. So if you’re on the disgracebook, twittler etc - give it a thought.

  1. Make people soup

I read that with a completely different meaning at first and thought this might be a much darker list than I expected.

Seems fine as long as the flavor is nice and rich.

You may be surprised to find out who created this and also who is in it.

Oh wow, that was hilarious!

So much of the old children’s programming just looks like some people popped some shrooms and filmed whatever nonsense they could think of and then were like “Ok, that’ll fit the timeslot”. “But what if the boss sees it?” “Adults never watch this stuff. As long as it fits the time slot they’ll give it the thumbs up.”

Did you recognize Adam Arkin? I do believe his and Alan’s are in the credits.

I gotta say that pre-Elmo Sesame Street was chock-full of creative material like that. The reason the show was successful is that there weren’t any baby-talking characters that weren’t babies, and he just fucked that all up. I can fully replay this in my mind. And it’s from the pilot!

Once you hear, “I am a weasel”, you’ll never get it out of your head, and I for one am glad of that!

addendum: remembering and watching this sort of material is a survival strategy for me, i dunno about the rest of you.

The funny thing is I remember nothing about that, except for the top of her bald head.

“I am a weasel” is just too precious.

My refrigerator and freezer are filled with perishable food, so now I have started stocking up on canned food. Something I usually don’t do.

I have been getting things like soup, vegetables, baked beans, and Spam. I even got some powdered milk, for calcium among other things. Cold baked beans might not be very nice, but I know they are well-balanced nutrition.

Is Progresso soup any good? I have never had it, but I like their cans.

Progreso is tasty. Seems healthy, although I don’t recall looking at the labels closely.

I’m going to have to try one of their cans over the weekend. I grew up with Campbell’s Soup, but drifted away from them when I realized I could make my own.

Yes. It’s different from Campbell’s if that’s what you’re used to, but it’s still good.

I wonder - not just for you, but for me, if a small propane camping stove could be used indoors IF there was proper ventilation? We have a parabolic reflector that screws onto a can of propane and works as a heater. And there’s always roasting marshmallows over a candle, lol.

I’ve been looking into getting more solar-rechargable power bricks, too. Hey, I’ve seen a few small hot plates that have USB connectivity. That’s an option, too. And Sterno.

zomg, i just remember as a kid absolutely thinking that Ball Park franks were great cold and uncooked. now, um…not so much.

I used a single-burner Coleman propane stove for about 6 months when a landlord wouldn’t repair my range. I never had any problems, but that apartment was not exactly air-tight.

I gave it away eventually. I was thinking about getting one again, but I decided if there is an interruption in supply chains — for whatever reason — it will be hard enough to get food let alone propane bottles too.

I have what I call my solar farm and my water treatment plant for the cottage;

The solar farm is a couple of small solar lanterns, and a solar panel with a battery. I can charge my phone with the solar panel. All are BioLite.

The water treatment is a tea strainer to filter out particulates, a UV pen (SteriPen; good for 8000 litres) for bacteria and amoebas, and then a Brita filter for heavy metals and pollutants.

Does your stove have a range hood that vents outside (ceiling cavity or outdoors)? Some just vent up into the cupboards.

If it vents outside, you can probably park the camping stove on your stovetop and turn on the range hood fan.

Nope! I’ll have to stick to the power bricks. Or even small solar panels that are bigger than power bricks!
