I’m going to keep some bottled water in the car & a life straw type filter. Filter then boil.
I think I’m okay in the car. But storage cubicle stuff will be in number 10 cans with stuff like this in a galvanized can with locking top. Like folks use to protect bird feed & dog food from rodents.
The foil things will be in a plastic storage box in the car. More rodent resistant than proof for sure.
The rats got into my car through the firewall between the engine compartment and the passenger cabin. Peanuts. Salted. In a plastic bag.
Rats sure can chew…
Came through the air vents? I can’t imagine they chewed through the metal.
If you have a container, you can purify a liter at a time with a steripen.
The firewall, at least one of them basically followed the brake pedal all the way from out to in.
I drive a lot of old vehicles, not always in the best condition, rusty and not the best design or engineering.
I have no doubt your car is in way better shape than any of the beaters I’ve been driving.
I love driving a cleanly-working shitbox. And I’m clearly not the only one…
I just paid off my first ever new car. A Honda CR V. She’s a pretty baby!
I finished my box of milk. Lasted 3.5 days. Not bad.
Can be used as a stove too.
They used to make a single-candle version which could be used to heat water, which is what I was looking for, but maybe it was prone to falling over.
Or, if candles are simply unavailable, but cardboard or other burnables are:
I found it takes a bit of practice for me to use my Kelly Kettle effectively. Still an excellent bit of kit. I do appreciate the build is rugged (heavy!) and not flimsy.
Congrats! That’s gotta feel good.
Never owned a new car. The newest cars I ever drive are whatever can be rented at an airport.
Thanks. I hadn’t heard of that one.
She’s a 2020 - but I still think of her as new.
Solo and others do a twig (etc.) stove that looks more like a backpacker’s stove, so you can put pans or kettles on it, not just one built-for-it bottle. Small and lightweight, and even in cities small bits of wood are easy enough to come by.
On RV channels, owners claim that rodents hate the smell of mint. I decided to spray that scent around my car when a chipmunk decided it wanted to live under the hood. It never came back.
What actually did invade my car one year was ants. Still cannot figure out why, because there wasn’t any food. However a plastic container with a mixture of borax and sugar mixture ended that.
The candle comments are reminding me of these Crisco videos:
I got these for my storage place. Peppermint oil in there, supposed to last a long time. Only needed two & the others will be saved for later.
And just picked up my galvanized containers for rodent proof storage of those foil packs. Maybe I will get a small one for the car.
I could have gotten a much larger one for cheaper; but I figured these are easier to handle. Or if I have bug out & load the car.
That’s true, think of Dr Zhivago — “I pulled it out of a fence.”
But I really can’t burn something smokey in my apartment.
There’s always sterno.
Just don’t drink it.
I’ve heard good things about that.
