Who on terra can’t understand that?
edit
Terra can refer to land or to a mother-goddess associated with the land. Gaia is the Greek equivalent. We could use a better name for our planet. Like Cybele.
Yes, I know that. I followed the debate at the time quite closely. The issue I’m referring to is that we’re taking a snapshot of our system as it is now, but other systems are at different points in their history. It’s like the palaeontology problem; the evolution of hominids is based on very few fossils indeed, as the detail gets filled in our perception of things changes.
I was actually too polite to mention that. I don’t want Trump finding out and it causing still more embarrassment for the British Government as he demands Jo Bell-Burnell be extradited to the US for influencing the result of the voting.
My supervisor in statistics, in fact, presented a paper to the BA about how Pluto was going to disappear in the 1980s (a nice straight line graph due to earlier overestimates of its size).
Cutting off the testicles of all the men would certainly do something for overpopulation and climate change.
Dear restaurants and everywhere else: Ingredients lists are useful. They help people find what they can eat without getting very very sick. Without ingredients lists we may have to stick to one or two things which couldn’t possibly make us very very sick, and sometimes, because someone added an unexpected allergen, we may still get very very very very sick.
For a couple of weeks, I have been dealing with symptoms of what seems to be angioedema - an autoimmune problem where the tissues of the lips and/or eyes swell up like balloons. It’s worrisome and extremely distracting.
Update to my jury duty concerns:
Yes, I had to go today. I didn’t have to worry about Dad stuck at home alone, since he’s still in the hospital, waiting on one last test. I told the hospital yesterday I’d be incommunicado since according to the court’s website, cell phones weren’t allowed. Then when I got there, they told me I could have brought it, juror rules are different. Why didn’t they tell us?
On the plus side, I’d brought a new-to-me book. Though What the Hell Did I Just Read by David Wong might not have been the best choice while I’m fighting off a nasty cold… surreal, sometimes gory horror challenging the nature of human perception doesn’t go well with intermittent woozy spells. (Thank goodness I brought plenty of Kleenex to cover my nose and mouth, snuffle and cough into! Plus I tried to sit away from people so I wouldn’t share my germs.) They also played movies for us-- Maid in Manhattan (I read through that) and the Matrix (yay!) Of course, 20 minutes or so into the Matrix we were told all the trials settled, and they released us, just before noon.
All in all, it worked out pretty well, with only minor annoyances. I’m free from state and county jury service for one year (the feds can still call me, but I’ll worry about that when the summons shows up.) I feel guilty that I can’t go visit my Dad in the hospital, but I don’t dare expose him to this cold (and he agrees, even if he’s grumpy as hell because he wants to go home NOW.) That last test will probably be tomorrow, so I can relax, curl up with my dogs and some chicken soup… and watch the Matrix on DVD.
My father is 95. Some years ago a relative went to visit him and my mother despite having a bad cough. They ended up, one in hospital and one being looked after by us. My mother has since died (unrelated) but we are extremely careful about not exposing him to things. You are, of course, entirely in the right. Don’t feel guilty; feel you’re being responsible!
Thank you! I worry that I might have already done it, as I was with him when the first symptoms showed up. It wasn’t until the next morning that I knew I was sick, and since then, I’ve stayed away. Let’s hope he didn’t catch it and I can get rid of it (or at least not be contagious) before he comes home.
Poorly Documented Utilities that would actually be useful if they had better documentation to get them installed.
/Ics Connection string to the Configuration Manager database
(/Ics="Data Source=[host];Database=[Configuration Manager dbname];Integrated Security=true;")
(/Ics="Data Source=[host];Database=[Configuration Manager dbname];User id=[username];Password=[userpwd];")
Required parameter, can be used with input csv file
Host. Just the hostname or do you want FQDN. Doesn’t matter, Tried both.
ConfigMan DBName. Well now…aren’t you assuming that the DB is on the same machine as the host? And that the DB is completely bog-standard config that no sane DBA would have set up. Or are there tricks for those instances.
User id and Password. Sure. Why not.
can be used with input csv file Really? How should I format that csv and where should it be in relation to this.
and what really tickled me was the webpage with the documentation is just a straight dump of the help file.
Down to the fact that the last line is
**Error: An invalid command line option (/?) was supplied **
Since the top line of the help file says to run the command with /H to get the help file.
EDIT: Even better, they keep using the same page to push new versions of this utility, so all the first four pages of comments aren’t even relevant.
EDIT the Second: Finally found another website that referenced the command and had a bit better info around it. From there I finally just kept firing away with various options until it would get farther. And Fail. But I tried again. And it Failed. I tried another time, it failed, caught fire and fell in the swamp. BUT THE LAST TIME WORKED.
Now to automate it.
Well if we’re going there, I have one.
Truth be told, it is mostly well-documented, except for one maddening part which apparently I am the first person ever to run into.
The end state is a plugin called PonyDocs installed over a clean install of MediaWiki, which is itself running on a clean, new install of a LAMP server. No glitches encountered before this part.
The full PonyDocs install info is here:
The part in having trouble with is:
Running said file as a patch results in a “this is garbage” error. I looked at the file – it’s a bunch of HTML which I guess is supposed to overwrite a MediaWiki file. No idea what the “one-line change” is.
Any ideas? My server experience is limited. I have a few ideas, but I’d like to read what anyone would care to write.
Hmm… I have no experience with that, but it looks to me like the patch file is a one-line change to comment out a line (around line 150) in includes/page/Article.php, function newFromWikiPage, the line with the comment // override to keep process cached vars.
So in another thread, I posted about a dream I’ve had about a dog I was dog sitting. Well, her owner’s taken off again to “discover themselves” and, once again, the dog a going through a succession of dog sitters. I swear, this dog gets more neurotic and needy each time I see her. It’s really upsetting me to the point where I’m contemplating just stealing the dog. I wonder what the process for seizing a dog for emotional neglect would look like…
Take the dog.
Do you need to actually ‘steal’ the dog? What about asking the owner if you could be the perma-sitter, but of course whenever they are in town they’re welcome to have the dog over for a visit? Don’t say that you’re the new owner: just say that you see the dog isn’t comfortable with changing sitters all the time, so she’d be much happier if she had one place to stay: you’d become the permanent boarding kennel.
If, that is, you’d like to have the dog all the time.
Did that. Twice in fact. The first time, they accused me of getting too attached to the dog, they could look after it themselves (with help from their family and friends). Second time (about three years later), I had the dog for 6 months, then they moved out of town, where they still reside… unfortunately, no one in new town will watch over their increasingly neurotic dog any more, so dog’s back here, shuttling between sitters while they split time between my town and their home.
I know this sounds insane; I hate thinking about the circumstances because they’re so mind boggling it’s painful.
I hear you. There’s no way you could have known years ago when you first bonded with the dog that her situation would get worse and worse over the years. Compassion can be painful, when you aren’t in a position to help as much as you’d like.
I mean… not to get too psychic woo woo … but it feels like the dog chose you, and wants to be with you. Poor dog. Take the dog. Easier said than done I know.
You know what really grinds my gears?
Trying something new only to have it turn out terribly disappointing.
Like breakfast sandwiches. Speciality’s, I’m looking at YOU.
It’s one thing to offer breakfast sandwiches made from croissants, but it’s a FUCKING ABOMINATION to advertise ‘bacon, egg and cheese’ when the eggs you’ve used are fucking hardboiled.
Who does that???
I’m almost annoyed enough to take a customer satisfaction survey…
