TIL: the University of Florida is home to the largest number of Jewish undergraduate students of any college in the country.
What in the actual fucketing fuck.
But HEY… at least UFL has INTELLECTUAL DIVERSITY, RIGHT?
God damn I fucking hate this stupid ass timeline.
Did he “resign under pressure” or did he resign in protest? Because those are two very different things. One is cowardice and the other courage.
Given the source, I’m going to assume the latter.
Fuuuuck! He really did stand up for the rights of humans writ large. I am terrified of what comes next. Holy shit…
But far more importantly, gender studies, like humanities and qualitative social sciences, produces critically engaged thinkers who do not assume the world is as it is because it must be this way, but rather consider how we got here and how we might change things.
Nothing scares these dipshits more than critical thinkers.
And I like how she wraps it up…
I would be nearly hopeless about the future of gender studies in the U.S. if not for a valuable lesson I learned teaching gender studies in Russia: Critical thinking is difficult to destroy. It will fester in the cracks and fissures left behind by the regime. And, when the regime collapses—as all authoritarian regimes eventually do—gender studies will return with the skills and courage to teach about how the world really is, not how many on the far right wish it would be.
What I’ve found strange is the non-academic side of things. I’ve written before about some of my daughter’s struggles with poorly managed systems during the worst of the COVID pandemic, but my son has had entirely different difficulties. He’s an engineering student at a large and prestigious public university, in the Honors College, and has a 4.0 after 3 years. He’s often tutoring peers in his discipline. He has never gotten a whiff of callback on his internship applications. He’s not applying as early as he probably should, but it’s not like he’s blown them off, either. But nothing.
It’s frankly really weird. I’ve personally observed him in a room of professionals in his field, and he was the rockstar. WTF is the disconnect?
I honestly don’t know… but you’re right that there is weird stuff happening with regards to employment… the whole process of automating hiring as much as possible is just bad news, and I’m sure that’s something to do with it.
