Talkin' about music

I remember these interviews. Probably the only interviews about Bob Dylan you would need to hear.

This gave me a bit of a sad, since the prof that was on my dissertation committee who passed away was working on this very topic… but it’s very interesting. (RIP, Denis)

According to this article in a local newspaper, the music streaming service Spotify has been featuring new and previously unreleased songs by famous Brazilian artists. The problem is that these artists don’t know anything about it. The new songs are instrumental tracks that have nothing to do with the musicians, some of whom have been dead for decades.

When I saw Hans Zimmer live last year he took a moment out to thank all the different back of the house crews that made the show possible — especially the road crew since without them there is literally no show. After the show closed, The Load Out was played over the speakers. It was really cool.

It’s wild to think there are people doing this kind of work in their golden years. It’s hard and thankless work. For those that work on the big money tours, they have wake up super early, perform intense and dangerous physical labor under immense time pressure, then take it all down again in the late night hours. On back-to-back show nights, they have to get by on barely any sleep. I don’t think I could do it, but I certainly respect those that do.

I’d imagine there’s plenty of this stuff in Negativland recordings given the amount of material that they have done revolving around the Soviet Union.

And the most important number of all: eleven.

That’s ridiculous. It’s not even funny.

I really wish I understood this, but maybe some things are are best left unknown and I should wallow in the sound.

Today I learned about a new instrument.

I always assumed the sound was from a muted trumpet.

All I’m doing is learning the drums, and I’ve already realized that the cheapy drum throne my drums came with is not going to work out well for my back. After a one hour lesson, I’m in some pain. I need a better one with a back rest, or I’m just not going to be able to play the drums.

I wonder why more drummers don’t try standing, a la Sheila E. The other members of the band stand and move around throughout their performances. Why not the drummer? We know sitting for long periods of time isn’t good for your back. I realize Sheila E. doesn’t use as big a drum kit as, say, Phil Collins did, but it seems like playing while standing could work. It wouldn’t help with their hand and arm problems, but I bet it would eliminate a lot of the back problems.

ETA: Duh. Pedals. The kick drum and the hi-hat. That’s why you have to sit. Hmm.
