I honestly don’t know what to make of that.
I get his newsletter… he has some thoughtful takes on culture in general that I’m not sure I agree with 100%. But they’re worth considering, often times.
I suspect that he’s ignoring the gender angle on why REM and the Pixies are still frequently discussed as influential, but 10,000 maniacs not so much… I’m guessing more women were into the later and more men the former two. Men’s taste are STILL taken more seriously than women’s. I don’t think that REM was any less earnest than 10,000 Maniacs.

I’ve had this going round my head for a couple of days, not just the song but the performance on TOTP and how the UK and US charts started diverging afterwards.
It wasn’t the first successful house music single here, but it was the one that made Britain pay attention.
