Muse, too.
Don’t get me wrong — I think Oasis is fine, they had a couple pretty good albums, but they never lived up to “the next Beatles” hype. I never really cared for their interpersonal rivalries or self destruction. Maybe it was good for some laughs in the 1990s, but these days I don’t particularly want to see a band perform where the members conspicuously dislike each other. I’ve seen enough of that from other groups I liked way more.
Given my propensity to see live music, I may have considered getting tickets for their tour, but they aren’t coming up my way, and stadium shows suck ass anyway. They are definitely not a band I care enough about to travel for.
So too will this pass. But the hype machine rages on.
I found a home movie someone posted of the REM portion of the concert. It was from REM’s Monster tour.
At around the 1:30:25 mark you can see where the crowd spontaneously started throwing discarded paper cups in the air like confetti which was one of my vivid memories of the concert. Itooked really amazing in the moment. The other vivid memory was a dopey joke Michael Stipe made about not being able to play guitar but that he could strum an A minor.
If you’d gone to a posher school, it could have been Throbbing Gristle:
Fixed that for for them.
Now that’s cool! REM is pretty fucking flawless… And not just cause they’re local lads to me!
I think that Luke Turner (who is as far as I know English, an author, and founding editor of the Quietus) knew what he was doing when he wrote that for an international audience. And it’s not just the headline which is often some junk they slap onto your copy for their own lamebrain reasons. It’s in the text. Because while English people sometimes call some private schools public, they are still private schools.
My school might not have been posh, but it is 1340 years old and was founded by a saint. I still remember having to march across Carlisle city centre to go to church services. They weren’t playing Black Sabbath at those.
Oh, i know. I just never pass up an opportunity to cram in a reference to a band that meant everything to me.
And that wild tiger…was Oasis.
Church services were reserved for Iron Butterfly?
I think so, yes!
Why are they not talking about tomorrows Black Sabbath festival at Villa Park, Birmingham?
Sadly the bulk of what I’ve read about this upcoming show is serious speculation around if Ozzie will live through this final show, or opt for a Viking’s death on stage.
Indeed! Much bigger deal! Not to mention that Pulp has a new album out this year!
But wait… there’s MOAR Oasis…
I’m not trying to be a jerk about Oasis, cause I know some folks enjoy them, but like the last time the Guardian did this, it really is an unhinged amount of coverage for one, kind of mid band…
Oasis def had some good songs, but the whole situation around them has always felt… manufactured? There’s always been a lot of hype around them, but that’s because people in the industry had these lofty opinions of them. Their implosion and in fighting definitely helped fuel the fire, but at the end of the day despite me liking their sound and some of their songs i’ve always felt some suspicion over their fame. I don’t know if that makes me sound like a hater
It’s cool they’re back together playing music, but i feel pretty ambivalent over the whole thing
I’m sick of the coverage, it’s just incessant on all media outlets including the news where i thought there were far more pressing issues to cover.
