Ohhh, looking forward! Any chance to grant permission to @KeybillyJefe for posting pics, @LockeCJ ?

EDIT: Ah, should have first read on in the thread…

Don’t let a catalan (like, technically me) hear that, even as a joke. France has been trying to squash Catalan in Southern France for centuries; first calling it “patois” (usually translated in english as “pidgin” but basically “creole”, “townspeech”, “uncultured dialect” etc*1), banning its use in 1700, and prosecuting the peoples (both north and south of the frontier, as this also came with the ascent of the borbonic plag… lineage of kings), which by the way -sorry for the segue- generated a Catalan gypsy diaspora that reached Russia *2, but most commonly there are fairly large communities of “gitanos catalans” up to Belgium.

It took centuries for the prohibition to be lifted and the language is still fairly endangered, as there are basically no laws protecting it and depends on the will of the local people to keep it alive, along with the other languages of France, like Occitan and Norman, among others.

(so yes, french sounds a bit like catalan because they both drink from medieval occitan but comparing french to catalan is equivalent of craking a racist joke in the south  )

*1 (from wikipedia: The term patois comes from Old French patois, ‘local or regional dialect’[1] (originally meaning ‘rough, clumsy or uncultivated speech’), possibly from the verb patoier, ‘to treat roughly’, from patte, ‘paw’,[2] from Old Low Franconian *patta, ‘paw, sole of the foot’, plus the suffix -ois. )
*2 They call themselves either Gitanos or Calés (from Kale, meaning “black man”) and they come from the south of spain. In france they call them “tsiganes” to differentiate them from Roma people, and the local “bohemes”. And segue of the segue, I discoved this by accident, reading a webcomic named “rasputin catamite”

Still finding my way around here. Two questions come to mind:

  1. How is this place funded? Is there a donation or subscription link?
  2. Is there a “If You See Something (IRL), Post Something!” thread? That was one of my favs from old BBS.

Thanks again for inviting me. “Sorry about the centerpiece, thanks for understanding”

I think I would fill the hard drive space quite quickly if we had that…

What I want to know is, why do dark orange and light red get basic color terms, but none of the other variants of the color wheel colors?

To make up for the fact that this:

And This:

Are all just “blue” for some reason.

If you’re lucky! (depending on the language)

Look thru here for the discussion on that

I don’t think we have a thread for random things seen IRL. You could start one?

Ah! Well, sorry, & thank you for schooling me.

no offense taken! I, fortunately, think that culture is adquired, and nationality is a lottery, so I seldom care about these things… but that also meant that usually am the one making the blunder, as people mistake my candidness for intentional slight

Definitely check out the thread that @kii shared. The short answer is that I pay for it, but I’m open to ideas on how to self-fund. There are a number of things that are higher priority, so this is a longer-term prospect.

This is among the shorter-term goals that I have. I can definitely see that disk space consumption has increased recently, so I’m working on a solution to make the limits less rigid.

Newton tried splitting off indigo. It survives in ROYGBIV, but since indigo dye is used for what we call blue jeans, it plainly didn’t take.

If I remember right (and I haven’t bothered to confirm this independently, so grain of salt, etc.), Newton really wanted 7 pure colors because of the perceived divinity of the number 7. This despite the fact that with typical trichromic vision there are clearly only 6 pure bands.

Well, I don’t know about divinity, but he definitely matched it up with the 7 intervals of the musical scale. Dorian mode, apparently, since orange and indigo are the semitones.

As to how many bands there actually are, I think it really depends what you are primed to see. Ancient Greeks listed the rainbow as just having three bands – red, green, and purple – which I notice correspond roughly to our cones. Aristotle gives 7 “primary” colors in total, the others being white, yellow, blue, and black. It’s weird to me he didn’t notice yellow and blue are also in the rainbow, but I guess he just sort of saw them as the overlap of other bands. And personally I would have considered orange much the same way…to me there are only 5 major bands, all grading into each other.

Newton was really interested in the physics rather than perception, so considered the whole thing as actually infinite colors with any division arbitrary anyway. That said, his choice seems reasonable to me…the difference between blue jeans and the sky looks about as much as between red and orange. With indigo forgotten, it leaves an awkwardly large range of blue like @PurpleCat said, and we’re stuck fumbling around with trying to adopt some kind of cyan or teal or turquoise instead.

Hello everyone. I had no idea this place existed, but I am exceedingly glad to have somehow stumbled upon it.

I was banned at the other place (I can guess who probably did that) for the last few days before it closed, for expressing my disappointment in multiple and persistent ways. Quelle surprise! So I’m very, very happy to see quite a few handles here that I recognise and would have badly missed if I’d been limited to whatever they are trying to do on Substack (which was severely bumming me out) so I’m excited to have arrived. Thanks to whoever is behind all this.

I only changed three letters from my former handle at the other place - a change that makes my part-new handle here even more appropriate, I guess. Not sure I shouldn’t have taken the chance to try out a whole new handle but I figured some of you might want to know who I was (as if the toast icon would not have given the game away to those who might recognise it). Still wondering if I should replace it with a new name. Will sleep on that, but the toast will remain so you’ll know it’s still me, if I do adopt a new name.

Anyway, I guess the vibe here may be a little different, so I’ll probably lurk for a bit to get a feel for the place and what goes on and how this new (to me) community works (and all the brouhaha at the other place made me realise I perhaps need to spend less time online for a while, too).

Ramble, ramble, blah, blah - enough said. I hope it’s ok for me to take my coat off and sit quietly in the corner for the time being.
