There’s a reason for Gideon v. Wainwright.

The traditional argument against Gideon is that the prosecution represents the public interest, and should get public funding, while the defense only represents private interest, and should not get public funding. But not convicting innocent people is a public interest, so as long as people are presumed innocent, the defense repesents an equal public interest, and should have resources equal to the prosecution.
