From the article:

Two of his conspirators also offered to sell … more than 100 kilograms of ‘yellowcake’ uranium.

Which raises all sorts of interesting questions. Like who at Japan Nuclear Fuel Limited (JNFL) has flipped to the Yakuza? Or is there some other way for someone in Japan to get their hands on yellowcake?

Some napkin math, for my curiosity:

100 kg of yellowcake (U3O8) is about 85 kg of Uranium. U235 would be about 0.7% of that, or about 0.5 kg. Iran is enriching uranium up to 60% right now, so 100 kg of yellowcake would be about 1 kg of 60% enriched uranium.

Over the past year, Iran has increased its enriched uranium by about 17 kg, up to 182 kg. So it seems like a 1 kg addition to the stockpile would be significant.

American lawmakers have expressed concern that Chinese government agents could buy up land near these bases and use the locations to spy on military activities.
