The goddamn Trump Administration (Part 1)

This article really brings that point home in the brutal second paragraph:

:frowning:

Obviously copying or going along with Trump’s policies isn’t ever going to win over any of the MAGA folks to the Democrats, and only trashes any trust or legitimacy with their base.

I mean, what do people expect Democrats in Congress to do? They are the minority party, and the majority party refuses (or is too afraid) to work with them. If anything, Republicans are disincentivized to work with Democrats because Musk is extorting them with primary threats if they dare to do anything other than rubber stamp what Trump wants. Dems can make a lot of noise and try to obstruct, but without a majority and without any Republicans willing/brave enough to break ranks, they can basically do nothing of substance.

They haven’t even been trying. Why is unanimous consent still happening?

A corollary of the Streisand Effect. QED.

Switzerland. And they really should do it right now!

How long until Trump pardons the Grennon family?

Sanders and AOC have, with their rallies in red places. Imagine if most of the Dems in Congress spent at least some time doing that!

Oh, absolutely. And Hollen started a bunch more going to El Salvador.

But why does nothing seem to be happening in the halls of Congress itself? They really don’t seem to be trying there.

ETA: Except for Booker. Has anyone else done anything inside Congress?

I was listening to a podcast recently where the hosts were making some good points about how making some noise really can sway public opinion and turn around issues that are initially favorable to Trump.

One example: some political consultants look at polling showing that Trump had high favorability ratings on some immigration issues and “protecting our borders.” So a few (but certainly not all) high-profile Democrats decided to avoid the issue, and you’ve got people like Gavin Newsom making statements calling the unlawful deportation of people to a foreign gulag without any due process a “distraction” that’s a trap for Democrats who should be talking about kitchen table issues instead. But some people did keep talking about it, keeping the issue in the news and raising public awareness enough to actually shift public opinion. Now the majority of voters actually are concerned about the due process and defiance of court orders thing (no thanks to Newsom). So the point is that politicians actually do have agency, even when they’re in the minority. Some are more willing to use it than others.

I wonder if passage of such a bill will embolden bigots to even further harass citizens who speak non-English languages while in public. I have a feeling that the Amish (Pennsylvania Dutch-speakers) would also see an uptick on such harassment, although to a much lesser degree than other groups.

I’d personally like to see them gumming up the works as much as possible. No votes for anything on Trump’s agenda, constantly speechifying to point out how none of this is normal or good, going on the road to let people know it’s not normal or good, trying as hard as they can to peel off their GOP colleagues to turn against trump, even if it puts them in a position to be primaried.

Which only a handful are actually doing.

Exactly!

Florida, again; 2nd in the US for cons and scams.

BTW: Right now, I can’t see Trump—as much as he appears to favor the most decrepit criminals—pardoning these monsters… but I will.

Too much Mr. Nice Guy from the Dem Congress side as usual. They should be feverishly working non-stop at getting everyone spitting angry at Trump and his stooges. The ammunition is there, dammit.

Trump is now polling underwater on every single issue, including the economy and immigration. Do not let him claim he has a mandate or is all powerful. We are the majority — not Trump.

I just got a scam call claiming to be a final warning from immigration. Because of course that’s happening, now that so many people can’t afford to ignore that kind of threat. The predatory assholes in charge have created vulnerability and now the smaller predatory assholes are there to take advantage. :sob:

I’d think that a Putinesque solution would have been implemented by now since the “Problem” slapped his own name on a fucking Tower.

Well, the windows don’t open and he doesn’t drink tea.

So I guess it’s the umbrella thing?

Welp, there is the roof, and he does still own office space in the building—so that should get him in.
