Thank you! Apparently, according to SCOTUS, as long as Congress approves funding for military actions, that satisfies the Constitutional requirement that only Congress can declare war. It drives me nuts that in other areas, SCOTUS is like “But it says xxxxx in plain language! You can’t just pretend it means something else!” But here, they’re like “Oh no, that’s fine. You don’t actually have to ‘declare’ war in order to declare war. You’re good!”

There are 11 federal holidays as others here have pointed out, no employer is mandated to give their employees those days off, and most do not give them all 11. They also aren’t required to pay them for those days off. I toured a fiberglass factory in my hometown years ago. It runs 24/7/365 because if they ever shut the furnaces off, it takes days (maybe weeks, I don’t remember) to get them back up and running. There was a massive tornado that hit the town in 1979. That factory didn’t shut down even then, and they even suffered some damage from the storm. Holidays aren’t costing American businesses millions, much less billions. Trump’s golf outings, on the other hand, are costing American taxpayers millions.

Ireland has only ten public holidays a year. We need a few more.
It’s something that all workers can get behind, particularly low paid workers because if it’s a public holiday (even if you are part time) they gotta give it to you and your pay.

Really, the answer there should be pay them a living wage for the hard work they do… but of course service work, which is overwhelmingly feminized, is marginal by design. It ensures that women in bad relationships, marriages, families, etc, are dependent on the men in their lives.
MOAR Holidays for ALL of us! I once stated in class that here in the US, we should celebrate all the major religious holidays and give everyone time off for them. We should take off all the Eids, Hanukah, Solstices, Dewali, etc, etc… Halloween should be a national, federal holiday that we all take off…

And anyone who has ever worked in caring for others, human services, healthcare knows that you have to show up 24/7 365 days a year. Christmas/New Years/Thanksgiving still needs coverage. I’ve worked overnight shift or day shift for all of those.

start-a-rumor via a gormless observation: All the truly heart-breaking scenes of ICE kidnappings start out with the ICE goons demanding ‘proof of citizenship’/ID from their victim while simultaneously refusing to provide any of their own IDs, their agency, or warrants. So feckless rumor time: “ICE agents are all illegal immigrants who have been granted a temporary devils deal!” (i swear if i still had a twitter account (long gone now) i’d post that conspiracy theory there)
