For the record: A) I don’t think anyone has ever said that. B) While everyone who fought for the Confederacy may not have been an evil person, they were still all fighting to defend an evil institution. C) The idea that they were fighting to defend their homes or their states or their anything other than slavery has been so thoroughly debunked that there are no more bunks left. Some of the soldiers, I’m sure, believed that’s what they were fighting for, but we all know now that they were lied to, in much the same way Republican politicians, especially the MAGA ones, lie to their voters. But Vance knows all this, because unlike his boss, he is absolutely not a stupid person, nor is he ignorant of history.
Indeed. That wasn’t a racist dogwhistle. It was a sousaphone.
Yoink!
“small unaffiliated groups…with intentions of committing violence” hnnn… i vaguely trust the seattle-PD a bit more than any federal goons, but, if they seem to know about these groups ahead of time; well, it does sound like establishing justification for police action for any behavior beyond singing Kum-ba-yah. They really have been peaceful protests so far – i’ve been an eye-witness to that.
Protesters surround federal building in Seattle, as thousands take to the streets

Thousands of protesters have taken to the streets of Seattle, surrounding the federal building on 2nd Avenue.
At 8:56 p.m., the protesters, with signs demanding ICE leave Seattle and stop deportations, have been peaceful.
Seattle police are urging residents and businesses near Capitol Hill, First Hill, and downtown to prepare for possible disruptions during a rally scheduled Wednesday evening, according to East Precinct’s Crime Prevention Coordinator.
The rally began at 7 p.m. at Cal Anderson Park.
Organizers led participants on a march through Capitol Hill and First Hill, to the Federal Building or Federal Courthouse in downtown Seattle.
Marchers may also return to Cal Anderson Park.
In an advisory, police said there is a likelihood that small unaffiliated groups may attempt to join the event with intentions of committing violence or causing property damage.
While the rally itself is permitted, SPD emphasized that they are monitoring for any unlawful activity that may arise during or after the event.
Residents and business owners in the affected areas are being advised to take preventive steps, such as securing or removing garbage cans and other small objects from sidewalks and alleys.
Police are also asking property owners to lock dumpsters to prevent misuse during the rally or march.
One of my absolute favourites too!
I must have seen it 10 times, which was no mean feat given the only VHS player we had access to was one that Dad would occasionally pinch for a weekend from the Social Services training department.
I strongly suspect that it doesn’t hold up these days, but to kid-me, it was pure magic.
Also, the bit with the weird upside-down vampiric bat people things sticks in my head to this day.
Only spoiled by internal pedant:

Kindly leave sousaphones out of this.
To paraphrase another saying: Shunning’s too good for them!
Hmm tough one. Stay away or take the money and turn up with a large “No Kings” flag and T-shirt?
…he is a liar!
Well, I’m sure there will be some people who will be proud to be there, inciting violence.
I was feeling really bad for her until I saw this:
Santa Maria, who voted for Trump in the 2024 election, says she’d hoped that his Department of Government Efficiency would bring technical expertise and upgrades to the Social Security Administration.
“But what they’re doing now is just eliminating the people and leaving the rest with the outdated computer system,” she says.
And now, with part of her retirement on the chopping block, she’s even more disappointed.
I guess I should still feel bad for her, but that makes it a whole lot tougher. “I was OK with brutalizing other people. I never thought I would get brutalized!”
Nope. I don’t feel sorry for her. I do feel sorry for the other people in a similar situation that didn’t choose to bring it onto themselves the way she did
tin-foil pork-pie hat plus “Succession” watcher wonders if Murdoch isn’t asking Vance what concession to total loyalty would look like if fox"news" commenced the “Sadly it’s time for trump to retire” programming (nahhh …?)
Vance Secretly Flies for Audience With Trump-Baiting Rupert Murdoch
KISSING THE RING?
The vice president quietly visited Rupert Murdoch’s sprawling Montana ranch.

JD Vance paid a visit to Rupert Murdoch’s sprawling Montana ranch on Tuesday, even as the media tycoon’s flagship newspaper continued its biting coverage of his boss.
The vice president met with the 94-year-old mogul, his son Lachlan Murdoch—the chief of News Corp and Fox News—and other Fox News executives at the 340,000-acre property near Yellowstone National Park, according to the Associated Press.
Vance’s office doesn’t release a public schedule, AP noted, so his arrival in Butte, Montana, on Air Force Two came as a surprise. The plane landed at around 2:30 p.m. and Vance left in a motorcade headed for the Dillon area, NBC Montana reported. The plane took off again after dark.
(always love these “Secretly” headlines when -i’m- able to read about them)
His 8 announced so far are “holy shit, this is really, really bad.” He has 9 more to go. I am more than a little terrified at how much worse it will get. My guess is these were released first because they were “the least controversial.”
I found his short list.
I don’t know if the seat filler story is true or not, but current weather forecasts predict rain and possible thunderstorms in DC on Saturday, so the parade might get a bit damp…
God, I hope that happens!!
The 4,000 California National Guard soldiers who President Donald Trump surged into Los Angeles remain unpaid due to delays in issuing official activation orders, leaving compensation and benefits in limbo.
Trump screws every worker, everywhere.
Odds that they will not wind up getting stiffed on this? I mean, that’s Il Douche’s whole schtick, right? God, I hate that man…
