And why would the Japanese want US rice anyway? It is far inferior to Japanese grown rice.
And this. Especially at a time when Japan is trying to lessen their reliance on the US. Even if Japan imported US rice, they’d probably have trouble giving it away. Much less selling it.

I’m not going to get into that argument. Rice quality is subjective based on culture. The Japanese prefer short grain, sticky rices (sushi rice is different than table rice), while the US prefers a longer grain, non-sticky rice, unless for a specific purpose such as for sushi. The US also prefers rice that has few broken grains (as do the Japanese), while West Africa prefers rice with up to 40% broken grains (which is considered inferior in the US) because it absorbs their sauces much better. (And Liberian swamp rice is just spectacular for that purpose).
That’s all to say that rice, unlike other grains, has deeper cultural meaning than other grains, such as wheat or corn, which are milled into powders to make other staples.

Not in all cases. There is some Japonica short-grain rice grown in California that is excellent. But from what I understand, the supply is completely consumed in North America, so there is no point in exporting it.

Texas of all places also produces some excellent rice. Which also largely supplies the domestic market.

Probably true. Big fan of Kohuko Rose rice myself. I’d love to try the more exclusive varieties grown state-side.
But we all know Trump is not talking about exporting our best rice.
Maybe not for much longer. Climate change has done a number on the rice industry here and it isn’t going to get any better. Particularly with how low the other water sources for people are becoming.
