Perhaps most disturbingly, the letter revealed “a covert and ideologically driven secondary review process by unqualified political appointees” that is now allegedly “interfering with the scientific merit-based review system” that historically has made NSF a leading, trusted science agency.
Another trusted institution down the drain. I know I’ve said this before, but the fact that he has been this fucking successful at dismantling the heart of US scientific leadership in only 6 mos is amazing to me.
It’s amazing how easily some people give up fairness, equality, equity, even basic decency for money. I’ll admit that I get a bit lost in where fealty lies with groups like this, but it seems to me that even though they have “U.S.” in their organizational name, they’re no more an actual federal agency than FedEx.
They’re “obligated” to follow this asinine royal proclamation to continue to receive federal funding, but that’s not a nearly the same as an actual obligation. There are plenty of organizations that could get federal funding by being bigots or enforcing other draconian policies (e.g., libraries that refuse to put censorship filters on their patron’s internet aren’t eligible for direct federal funding), but are perfectly willing to not pay that price.
I personally can’t conceive of any payment that would make me adopt bigoted policies, but I’ve never been a grifter like anyone on an Olympic committee.
There’s a large difference between placing someone who’s been proven to be “bad” (racist, fascist, harmful) in the bad category and just assuming everyone’s corrupt without any evidence. I think most people are still basically good, but some of the bad ones are especially loud.

Absolutely no one is standing up to him. GOP is in abject obedience to him out of fear and he continues to pick the worst people and they support him. If the Conservative party still actually existed, they could easily stop him, but it’s fully the Trump party. Heck, Johnson and the GOP have shuttered Congress for 2 months rather than discuss the Epstein list which doesn’t exist/is fake/shows Obama did it/clears Trump/other random lie here.
Oh, I understand how it is happening. The thing that I struggle with is the fact that my whole life, the US was the leader in high tech and science. I saw the moon landing on TV as a small kid, and ever since it’s been onward and upward. The fact that this can be not just pause, not even reversed, but utterly destroyed by a petty tyrant in just 6 months feels unreal. And we have no real chance to even check the destruction for 18 more months. How much more destruction will occur in that time? Is there even a chance to recover, or are we headed for a new Dark Ages? Who are our Irish monks, preserving the knowledge of the past? Probably being dramatic. I actually hope I am, but I feel like I am witnessing the burning of the Library of Alexandria, or the Hellenistic Fall, and knowing that there is no way to recover what was lost and that our society will be reset to a more primitive, brutal stage, and my children and grandchildren will never know the life I have taken for granted. God, I need a drink…
Add to that this includes the Special Olympics. The Olympics for people who have historically faced some of the worse discrimination ever.
If they can easily jettison trans people, how easy will it be for them to jettison the intellectually disabled? The paraplegic? Amputees?

Yep. Still waiting on that refund and we filed/mailed our tax return paperwork about six weeks before the deadline. The only positive outcome to this waiting is that Palantir DOGE didn’t steal our banking info like they did with people who use e-filing.

If you have that kind of control over the US economy, I would have thought there were less destructive ways of doing insider dealing. I guess this is the stupidest way of doing so.
What really gets me, is that even if what Tulsi was saying was true (which it clearly isn’t), it’s exactly what Trump did. In reality. Obama’s supposed crime was to falsely claim that Russia changed vote counts on behalf of Trump (which he obviously never claimed). But Trump did claim the Democrats (and China, on behalf of the Democrats) changed vote counts, and used that as justification for the actual coup attempt on Jan 6th. This administration is literally trying to turn projection into a scandal…
