The goddamn Trump Administration (Part 2)

France was going to invade Mongolia, but I just stopped it. Prove me wrong!

Just a few months ago Trump was talking about conquering Canada and Greenland, but fortunately he seems to have forgotten about that. So that’s two wars stopped right there. I could believe him forgetting a lot more by Christmas.

Texas republican governor greg abbott says that unless the Democrats who left the state to prevent the republicans from taking over the state (via gerrymandering) return he’ll remove them from office so that republicans can take over the state. So… autocracy with extra steps.

Texas governor threatens to remove Democrats who left state over Trump-backed redistricting

Hello and welcome to the US politics live blog. I am Tom Ambrose and I will be bringing you all the latest news lines over the next few hours.

We start with the news that Republican Texas governor Greg Abbott has said he will begin trying to remove Democratic lawmakers from office on Monday if they don’t return after dozens of them left the state in a last-resort attempt to block redrawn US House maps that president Donald Trump wants before the 2026 midterm elections.

The revolt by the state House Democrats, many of whom went to Illinois or New York on Sunday, and Abbott giving them less than 24 hours to come home ratcheted up a widening fight over congressional maps, Associated Press reported.

The planned vote on Monday could see five new Republican-leaning seats created in the House of Representatives. The move by the Democrats threatens to thwart Republican efforts by denying them a quorum, or the minimum number of members to validate the vote’s proceedings. …

It doesn’t sound legal; for whatever that means these days.

He’s basing his power to do so on an opinion written by his felonious attorney general.

This has been stated out loud by more than one of them. Adult women have this nasty habit of having their own minds and desires. Gotta get 'em young to prevent that, then discard them if they show signs of spoilage.

It’s not legal, and it’s really pissing me off that every news article I’ve seen about Abbott’s threat fails to mention that. The Texas Constitution give no such authority to the governor. He can appoint replacements to fill a vacancy but he cannot unilaterally remove a legislator from their elected office. That can only be done through impeachment. Or maybe a recall election, I’m not sure about that one. And every single fucking person reporting this story, including HCR, has neglected to mention that. They’re all just normalizing completely illegal behavior by a sitting governor.

From today’s The Daily Beans Good Trouble suggestion.

The White House wants to know what topics you’d like to hear more about, so they’ve sent out a survey.

Click Other and, in the freeform text, write, “The Epstein Files.”

It doesn’t work so well on my mobile. Every letter I typed made the text box bigger and I couldn’t scroll down to the Submit button. So I just typed “Epstein,” and clicked submit. I’ll try it on another browser and again when I log out from work on my personal laptop.

I thought the tribune article implied that while illegal in the past Paxton has thrown it to the courts as AG through real or assumed-until-contested power, which are mostly packed with sycophants who would do anything to cement rule over the de facto disenfranchised citizens of Texas?

Am I misunderstanding? God I hope so!

I took away that it was illegal but now those laws will be tested by a curated batch of partisan judges and in the interim GOP rule will be largely inevitable?

But I really don’t understand the law in general of course. I’d gone on sleepily feeling protected by it like many others.

My fear is that we in Texas can be expected to live as Abbott’s little serfs until what time we find out whether the SCOTUS would free us. But since this is the epicenter, the pilot-run, the cave where the monster was born, where the GOP tyrants decided that God made us alive for their pleasure and use alone because he didn’t stop them from hoarding money in Jesus’s name or raping kids… since this is that place, I have no hope. Nothing to push against that fear with to keep myself from collapsing into despair.

My guess is the local media doesn’t either?

Is there any?

At any rate I’m proud of anyone who stands up for our right to vote and have our votes count and anyone who fights voter suppression.

I missed it, but my wife reported that one of CNN’s guests this morning gave the analogy that Trump firing the BLS chief over the jobs numbers was the equivalent of the coach of the losing team firing the scoreboard operator.

Jesus Christ, that’s the most made up bullshit I’ve ever heard in my life. “Assumed-until-contested power” is not a thing. Constitutionally, in Texas, more power is vested in the state legislature than in the executive. Perry and Abbott, through their ridiculously long tenures, have carved out more power for themselves than previous governors, but there is nothing to suggest that the governor could unilaterally remove an elected legislator from their office. It would be a gross violation of separation of powers. And if the Texas Supreme Court lets him do it, Democracy in Texas will be truly dead.
