The goddamn Trump Administration (Part 2)

Yup. 7 to 28 is an increase of 300%; 28 is 400% of 7, but the increase is 300%, which is added to the original 100%.

My exact thought when I saw that image was ā€œAt long last, sir, have you no chin?ā€

That cut belongs to Jennifer Anniston only.

It’s a continuation of the script / talking point that must be repeated frequently enough to keep the base believing in the story.

Of course he knows, but the goal is to cast his opponents as criminals. None of the details matter, all his base hears is him calling Harris and entertainers speaking out against him as criminals. Same goes for those non-profits in his crosshairs - as well as anyone who works for them, contributes money to them, or supports them in any way. He’ll keep repeating this crap in an effort to get his base to sit back and shrug when officers are called upon to round people up for these imaginary crimes.

At this point I think his bizarre rants actually serve to directly undermine the rule of law just in that they are so demented that it helps distort thinking for those who don’t know better not to see the grown ups eli5.

Article II of the Geneva Convention has a formal, legal definition of genocide.

Article II

In the present Convention, genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:

  1. Killing members of the group;
  2. Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;
  3. Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;
  4. Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;
  5. Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.

What’s going on in Gaza right now, in my opinion, absolutely qualifies. Relocating Palestinians to Libya probably doesn’t, although the intent of that relocation could make it genocide. Even if it’s not genocide, it’s still a war crime. Forced relocation of a civilian population is a war crime. The only exception is if it’s a temporary relocation intended to protect people. But I doubt that’s the intent here.

When the ā€œTorture Memosā€ guy is saying ā€œwait a minute, this is way too farā€ā€¦

(odd that every article I’ve seen about this mentions him being a clerk for Clarence Thomas, but glosses over anything more recent)

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t the concept of Ethnic Cleansing stem from the wars in Yugoslavia and Rwanda? Because there were certainly acts of genocide, but the goal there was the removal of specific ethnic groups from specific lands?

I think people have posted about this here or in other threads, but…

Of course, this means that Trump paid celebrities for endorsements.

Yeah, I think that’s correct. Intent is an element, from a legal standpoint, for the Geneva Convention’s crime of genocide, so forced relocation could be an act of genocide, if the intent is the destruction of that group. Like, I don’t know, maybe if you forcibly relocated a group of people to a place where you knew some other group already there would be likely to kill them. But regardless, forcibly relocating a group is an act of ethnic cleansing, which I don’t think is a specific crime under that name, but more of a general term for acts like forcible relocation and so on.

So here we are 119 days after ending the war on day one and…

Just completed my two hour call with President Vladimir Putin of Russia. I believe it went very well. Russia and Ukraine will immediately start negotiations toward a Ceasefire and, more importantly, an END to the War. The conditions for that will be negotiated between the two parties, as it can only be, because they know details of a negotiation that nobody else would be aware of. The tone and spirit of the conversation were excellent. If it wasn’t, I would say so now, rather than later. Russia wants to do largescale TRADE with the United States when this catastrophic ā€œbloodbathā€ is over, and I agree. There is a tremendous opportunity for Russia to create massive amounts of jobs and wealth. Its potential is UNLIMITED. Likewise, Ukraine can be a great beneficiary on Trade, in the process of rebuilding its Country. Negotiations between Russia and Ukraine will begin immediately. I have so informed President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, of Ukraine, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, President Emmanuel Macron, of France, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, of Italy, Chancellor Friedrich Merz, of Germany, and President Alexander Stubb, of Finland, during a call with me, immediately after the call with President Putin. The Vatican, as represented by the Pope, has stated that it would be very interested in hosting the negotiations. Let the process begin!

We’re finally getting an actual Trump family response to the announcement, which is, of course, both incredibly stupid (gosh, how did not-a-medical-doctor Jill Biden miss this!?) and malicious. (I’m sure his daddy will weigh in before long with something similar.)

What I like is that Trump, in his complaint, starts off accusing Springsteen and Beyonce of illegal, ā€œin kind,ā€ campaign contributions but then starts talking about how much they were paid for ā€œillegal paid endorsements,ā€ which is… the opposite. It’s like he doesn’t know what these things are, but he’s heard the words (when he got in trouble for it himself). It’s always projection…

He does this quite a bit and it’s always the relevant federal agencies and/or his own staff. He very clearly learns about things (even things about his own administration) on Fox News/social media, and then responds on social media*. (Clearly at least in part because he doesn’t know how to do it officially.)

*People joke about Trump being a ā€œdemented racist grandpaā€ on social media, and he absolutely is. It’s not an exaggeration or comical characterization - nothing distinguishes him from random, uninformed, senile, social media racists who Have Opinions, except that somehow he’s also president. And a good chunk of the time, he doesn’t even seem aware of that fact.

The same process that’s been ā€œbeginningā€ since 2022?

That they started?

And that aside, I have an honest question – Trump talks about ā€œlargscale TRADEā€, but what does Russia need from us (other than for us to kindly facilitate releasing their money and yachts back to them)? What do we need from them? I can see European countries needing Russian oil, but I thought we were ā€œunlocking our energy potentialā€ (or whatever nonsense Republicans use to justify opening up every square inch of the country for oil exploration and coal mining). What else do we need? Faberge Eggs for Trump’s mantle?

Is this before or after we plunder the natural resources that they signed away under duress? And in any event, I have the same question as before – what trade do we need with Ukraine? How are they going to trade anything if they are in the process of rebuilding? Who’s going to fund this rebuilding? Russia?

This is all just so stupid and so lacking any substance. He so clearly doesn’t give a shit about peace in the region. He’s just deeply and transparently thirsty for a Nobel Peace Prize just to say he got one.
