Dr. Mike normally tries to stay out of politics. This is the most overtly political video heâs ever made, I think, and itâs a good thing. People with influence who have followings beyond just the left need to speak out.

Iâve definitely noticed through the years heâs stuck to a very rigid âjust the factsâ neutrality, never passing judgement on others as individuals, even when it would be incredibly easy to do so (especially when it comes to analyzing shows like âMy 600-lb Lifeâ and its ilk).
Even this, as a largely neutral, âthis is who this guy is, this is why heâs awful for public health, and this is why he needs to resignâ, will certainly be considered triggering to those the right. I can just see the comments section now being filled with slurs and unironic âstay in your laneâ kind of remarks.
To see people like him and Devin Stone making this kind of commentary just shows how not normal things are right now.
Yeah, the bus (etc) boarding was being done all over the country, if I remember correctly, and wasnât a border issue. They also didnât claim any legal authority to do it and didnât challenge it when Greyhound made a policy forbidding it - which happened after Greyhound was sued over allowing these warrantless searches and ended up paying millions. No one was saying, âThis is a border region, therefore they have the right to do it.â
Stopping drivers seems like it wasnât a border thing either - it appears they were targeting specific drivers (that they knew to be immigrants), though ICE, throughout the country, have been going to areas with a lot of immigrants and just randomly grabbing people (often they went there looking for someone in particular, didnât find them, and just started rounding people up, including citizens). Again theyâre not claiming special powers granted to them because itâs a border region, which means, in theory, people have certain rights to resist what theyâre doing that they wouldnât have in a border region, and if theyâre being denied those rights, itâs not legal.
Iâm pretty sure that Trumpâs directives for ICE/CBP include - or at the very least include elements that amount to - quotas for detainees that they have to reach, and these quotas are completely unrealistic, which leads to more and more unhinged cruelty by the agencies as an inevitable result, e.g. grabbing random people off the street.
