The goddamn Trump Administration (Part 2)

Nazi art and architecture was shit though, and absolutely in line with how Trump talked about buildings during his last regime.

The Italian fascists are the real outlier. Normally authoritarian regimes have dreadful aesthetics.

Yeah, the first time I saw the Milano Centrale train station I was really impressed. Frank Lloyd Wright once called it the most beautiful train station in the world. But soon after I learned that it was built by Mussolini as a symbol of his fascist regime to impress people upon their arrival to Italy, and that knowledge really took the shine off of it.

It’s hard to be fashionable and conformist actually.

Like either you stand out for your beauty and aesthetic or you don’t. Standing out by being a bit odd or ugly is right out. But when most people dress the same what stands out is whatever is least similar between them.

I would actually say the nazis were pretty good at architecture. It may not be my thing but it’s a coherent aesthetic and it does impress people. Basically to me it’s like they took the idea of a gothic cathedral and removed all the signs of humanity and divinity from it. Not “pretty” but effective and in line with their paradoxical ideals.

Meanwhile the Italians had the beauty of Roman architecture to work from.

With clothing I think this is an actual problem that can’t really be solved. Even the Italians and Germans didn’t actually look that good. A lot of the hot glamorous images are from movies not photos of real people wearing the clothes naturally. So they could nail an idea of an aesthetic (brutalist, clean lines, no bright colors, etc) but making that actually look good without careful lighting and camera angles is harder.

I think it stands out the most with women’s fashion. What was women’s fashion in the era? Incoherent and sloppy. It’s not so much designed as neglected and seeded with contempt. Traditional costume beautifies femininity too much and is mired in the very sense of individual culture they were trying to erase. Modern is too empowering. Head coverings and loose sacks imply loathesome foreign religions. And realistically money is generally tight for people under authoritarianism. So what is left?

Ugly ass potato sack dresses with a cheap cloth belt that’s what.

Well we vary quite a bit on architecture. I think Speer was shitty and regressive. Rome has a lot of really ugly rococo shit in it!

I had a book once of early 20th Century propaganda. The Spanish and German design was really bad, but their communist design was great, early Soviet was great but by the time they moved to socialist realism it was indistinguishable from the sentimental regression of Nazi art.

The right and the left in Italy both had modern type and graphic design. Which of course makes sense as Italian fascism derived in part from futurism.

I dunno.

I’m actually a big fan of Organic architecture - Wikipedia.

And so I think buildings like this are actually quite pretty.

I definitely think something like this is reductive but I also think it’s pretty in the way that a bleached shell is pretty:

But realistically most buildings constructed under either fascism or communism look like shit because they are designed like temporary shelters that never got replaced. Just big blocks of dirty concrete with windows.

I know even less about graphic arts, but I think early communist propaganda was downright pretty and in a way was probably inspiring to see. Chinese propaganda was particularly aesthetically rewarding. Like sure maybe this is cheesy, but it is also colorful, well drawn, and the composition is good. I can imagine some one looking at this would find the image inspiring and positive.

ikr? If you have to ask that question, you haven’t been paying attention for very long.

I can totally believe that Trump might say this, or something very close to it (the “that would be a different matter” part doesn’t quite sound like him) but I haven’t seen a source for this quote outside of social media with no citations. Do you know where that came from?

At least one fact-checking site says he didn’t say it, but maybe they’re wrong:

I got it here, but there’s no indication of source.

It doesn’t really sound like him to me either. Trump doesn’t care about whether something is fair play – what makes it fair or unfair is solely whether it’s in his interests. I can’t imagine him not bringing those up first. If Ukraine was wrong to do this strike, it would be because they didn’t clear it with him, and it’s one more example of how Zelenskyy, a comedian and not very good one, refuses to see that what they really need is peace like Trump offered.

Exclusive: US pushes countries for best offers by Wednesday as tariff deadline looms

You mean those tariffs that US courts have found illegal? Excellent negotiating tactic, sir!

I don’t know how other country’s leaders keep a straight face.

It’s kind of funny that this article is reporting that fact using anonymous sources like it’s a big secret or scoop. Obviously they didn’t clear it with Trump first. Why the hell would they even consider doing that?

Denying climate change is so 2015, all the cool kids are denying the existence of seasonal weather patterns now. When god sees Floridians boarding up windows he sends a hurricane to give 'em a little thumbs up for the effort.

Speaking of narcissistic, self-absorbed (and fascistic) things…

De-emphasizing degree requirements and banning DEI initiatives—as well as any census tracking of gender, race, ethnicity, or religion to assess the composition of government—the plan requires every new hire to submit essays explaining which executive orders or policy initiatives they will help advance.

In addition to asking for a show of loyalty during the interview process, all federal workers will also be continuously vetted and must agree to submit to “checks for post-appointment conduct that may impact their continued trustworthiness,” the guidance noted, referencing required patriotism repeatedly.

Remember when a certain side was constantly complaining that Obama’s executive orders made him an “emperor” and exceeded his powers? Pepperidge Farm remembers…
