It’s the veneer of rationality and “common sense”… As long as you don’t think about it for more than a second, it seems plausible. It also feeds the “us/them” dynamic of the modern world. It’s only “them” what get sick, not “healthy us”… Same with anything… poverty, being a victim of some kind of violence, etc… If we’re all individuals, and there is no society, anything bad that happens to an individual is “their fault”… It’s also a particular kind of religious reasoning brought to bear on secular world.

Almost certainly the Trump administration has some monstrous plans ready to go as soon as the right excuse comes up. However, this wave of terrorism won’t necessarily happen during this administration*, and it’s mostly going to be right-wing terrorism, which Republicans won’t want to react to or even acknowledge, but I also mean that any federal response (if any) will happen well after the wave has crashed over America, thanks to the loss of these kinds of federal programs and departments.
*Assuming the future holds anything other than continuations of this administration, something which I have to believe for my own sanity.
