At WaPo’s article about the Kennedy Ctr., one of the comments suggested that instead of boycotting the KC, instead make sure & go to the shows that interest us, & don’t go to the shows that do not, this way the programmers will get the msg. about what kinds of shows we want to see.
While I get their point, I was already doing this. The last thing I’m going to do is spend at least $25 a ticket to see a show that I’m not interested in seeing. As it happens, the last 2 KC tickets I bought (& the first since Covid was over) I ended up being unable to go to the show - so even the good shows are an investment of money and time.
I suppose there are KC attendees who, heretofore, were sufficiently fortunate/generous/profligate to go to every performance there, regardless of their personal interest or preference regarding the content, but I am most certainly not one of them.
(In fact I think I might go back & put the above as a response to that comment) [ETA: not gonna find that needle in that haystack, a day later]
Also,
Meanwhile, musician Ben Folds and opera singer Renée Fleming said they were stepping down as artistic advisers with the center, as did the treasurer of its board of trustees, TV producer Shonda Rhimes, her spokesman confirmed. [WaPo]
No word yet on Jason Moran’s role; I only ever went down there for jazz concerts…
ETA: I don’t know if this is a “thing” with the right-wing in general, but I have heard the complaint (sample size = 1, but more than once) that the KC Honors never go to anyone who’s conservative. When I ask who they think was overlooked, I never get a specific response, only perhaps a complaint about someone who did. Perhaps it’s something they got from FuxNews.
i do not believe for a microsecond that any republicans “had their concerns allayed”; if anything their fears of “being primaried” somehow focused that that was all they ended up selfishly caring about. Many people will die because they gave RFKjr this power. If a random selection was made among the entire American populace it’s statistically certain that person would be less harmful in this position than RFKjr. I really want these republicans who voted for RFKjr to be closely associated with this foul action for the rest of their lives. i’ll be disappointed in that, but that’s what should be the case. <long string of weary feckless expletives>
You can still report map errors through the “Report a data error” option. Zoom out a bit and right click the option. I’ve done this three different times through different accounts.
RFK is now empowered kill a lot of people (whether intentionally or not). Has anyone read a good summary of how that will now happen, so I can share with friends and fam?
I can’t “like” many posts in the thread until they turn on the emojis. After that finally happens I’ll spend like a week going through the hundred plus a day posts with angry, crying or puking “likes”. I’m not disengaged - I read ALL this. I just can’t “like” ANY OF IT
Serious question - since the real cost of these tariffs are paid by the importer, why are these countries negotiating at all? Why are they not “LOL stop hitting yourself, dumbass says what?”How is T shooting America in the foot leading to negotiations at all?
The cost is paid by the importer, but that still discourages trade that both countries benefit from. So it’s shooting both of them in the foot, and not all of them are as apathetic to the damage to their economy as Trump is.
I do wonder if it would be better if we (Canada) didn’t impose counter tariffs, because we will be blamed for the economic chaos coming. If we didn’t do counter tariffs, we could just sit back and say; “Look; we have done nothing; this all on you”.
They don’t care though. Anyone who’s paying attention to truth already knows the tariffs will hurt America. Trump wants them anyway as a way to exert power and bully people and the only thing that stops bullies is standing up to them. I still think that one of the best responses would be to sternly enforce the hell out of laws against X and all Musk’s other companies, because he is a pathetic coward that folds fast when people actually do.
I wonder if that’s some of the thinking behind targeting well known, but economically low-impact (for ) products from red states. Make it hurt the most where people are likely to complain the loudest.
I mean, if we just flip the switch on then Vermont, New York, Michigan hurt the most. on the other hand…
Sorry, editing again… We could also do things like start stripping cars down to the bolts at the border to find illegal guns if the individual in question was, say, an NRA member, or was criminal-adjacent, or vociferously pro-gun on social media. Maybe start demanding vaccination proof at the border. Maybe start screening people for COVID and Flu before letting them in.
Termination emails have been sent in the past 48 hours to scores of government workers, mostly recently hired employees still on probation, at the Education Department, the Small Business Administration (SBA), the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), and the General Services Administration (GSA), which manages many federal buildings.
It was not immediately clear on Thursday how many federal workers stood to lose their jobs in the first wave of firings. But the move fulfills Trump’s vow to reduce the size of the federal government and root out the “deep state,” a reference to bureaucrats he views as not sufficiently loyal to him.
“The Agency finds that you are not fit for continued employment because your ability, knowledge and skills do not fit the current needs, and your performance has not been adequate to justify further employment with the Agency,” letters sent to at least 45 probationers at the SBA stated.
Reuters has seen a copy of the termination letter.
Over the next four months, 1,456 federal employees were fired, despite the fact that no one was ever found to be involved in espionage. Many were removed simply for being gay, which the order had explicitly defined as a security risk. Air Force Lt. Milo Radulovich was forced to resign his commission simply because his sister was a suspected communist. Others, like cartographer Abraham Chasanow, were pushed out on the basis on flimsy rumors of suspicious political beliefs.
The widespread political purges of the early 1950s echo clearly today. Seventy years ago, the reasonable pretext of hunting Soviet agents opened the way to a yearslong, paranoid campaign, motivated by outlandish conspiracy theories, that destroyed countless careers but did nothing to improve America’s security.
It can be tempting to say that just as the Red Scare petered out, so too will the current hunt for “disloyal” elements. But for all the parallels, there’s an important difference: Loyalty then meant loyalty to the United States; today Trump demands loyalty to himself and his agenda.
Once the public realizes the destructiveness of the purges conducted in Trump’s name, will he halt them? That remains an unsettlingly open question.
Cory Doctorow mentioned the idea that the IP laws Canada brought in as part of the trade negotiations should be repealed if the US isn’t going to keep its end of the deal.
