WASHINGTON — The House of Representatives on Tuesday approved a government funding bill that would avert a Friday night shutdown if it clears the Senate by then.
The vote was another victory for House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), who once again overcame opposition from several Republican lawmakers who initially withheld support for the measure.
The bill passed by a vote of 217-213, with one Republican against and one Democrat, Rep. Jared Golden (D-Maine), in support.

Trump promised to be a dictator on day one
The cynical take on this was that the day would never end. Well, it’s happened.
In this case, Republican leaders did so using a particularly unusual contortion: They essentially declared the rest of the year one long day, nullifying a law that allows the House and Senate to jointly put an end to a disaster declared by the president.
House Democrats had planned to force a vote on resolutions to end the tariffs on Mexico and Canada, a move allowed under the National Emergencies Act, which provides a mechanism for Congress to terminate an emergency like the one Mr. Trump declared when he imposed the tariffs on Feb. 1.

Donald Trump, for years: Electric cars are terrible, they “cost a fortune,” they have no range, they’re a hoax by “Radical Left Fascists, Marxists, & Communists” and they should “ROT IN HELL.” I’m eliminating all the incentives to buy one and removing all the chargers from federal buildings.
Also Donald Trump: Why aren’t people buying Teslas? It’s obviously because of collusion in illegal boycotts.
Assuming he actually does it (although given how often Trump says he’s going to do things that he doesn’t, it seems unlikely), he’ll still never actually even ride in one because he’ll be spending the rest of his days being driven around in special presidential armored vehicles. So what the heck would happen to it? A gift, I guess (and probably paid for with someone else’s - taxpayer? - money, no less).
It is rather incredible that Trump, who frequently tries/threatens to use state power to punish private companies for saying/doing something he didn’t like, thinks boycotts can (or should) somehow be illegal. The idea that anyone other than himself might have some impact over the fate of a company is apparently really upsetting to him.
@MerelyGifted: It’s amazing to watch that video, see Trump do a variation of his usual “people don’t know this thing” and realize that the word “groceries” was actually alien to Trump. He clearly feels clever for having used this weird obscure word (to the point where he’s on the verge of taking credit for the word itself). Which makes sense, I suppose - it’s like the English/French origin in the division of words for the live animal and the meat of the animal (cow/beef, sheep/mutton, chicken/poultry, etc.), that happened because the Norman conquerors only dealt with the meat provided by their English-speaking servants who raised and slaughtered the animals. Trump has never bought - or even had to think about the very idea of - groceries. People have always done all that for him, and provided him with the meals to eat, so the very word must seem like some specialist jargon to him.
Although to be fair to him, he never actually promised he’d only be a dictator for one day, that idea came out of attempts to normalize the abnormal.

Elon Musk calling war hero, astronaut, and senator Mark Kelly a traitor because of his stance on Ukraine (traitor to what, exactly, Elon? Your pal in Moscow?) is not helping his ratings. It’s also super-fucking illegal to use your office to promote a product like this, but…well you know.

State Superintendent Dr. Michael F. Rice is issuing the following statement on today’s announcement by the Trump Administration that the size of the U.S. Department of Education workforce is being cut nearly in half:
"Today’s action is an outrage, a likely prelude to programs, protections, and funding-and by extension children in Michigan and around the country-being adversely affected. Funding and support from the U.S. Department of Education primarily benefit children who have greater needs and thus require more funding to educate. These staffing cuts will ultimately harm those vulnerable children, including students with disabilities, poor children, children experiencing homelessness, and English learners, among others. The federal government already underfunds education, particularly for our students with disabilities.
