The goddamn Trump Administration

They’re working hard on grocery prices.

I don’t know, but here’s what I do know. During Trump’s first term, one of his most reliable votes in Congress wasn’t Stefanik. She voted in line with his position a lot, but not all the time. If I remember, it was somewhere around 80%. No, his most reliable vote in Congress . . . Liz Cheney, who voted in line with Trump well over 90% of the time. So why did Trump embrace Stefanik so much? Because when she spoke in front of cameras, she kissed Trump’s ass every time. Cheney didn’t. This is also why I was kinda pissed when Harris decided to campaign with Cheney and likely offered her a spot in her cabinet. Cheney is not an ally to Democrats just because she also now opposes Trump. If it weren’t for January 6, Cheney would still likely be supporting most of Trump’s policy positions. Anyway, is Stefanik a political genius a la Frank Underwood? Probably not. But she does play the game.

ETA: I do think Stefanik would probably rather remain in Congress, the more I think about it. UN Ambassador is not exactly a stepping stone to greater power in Washington. In fact, I think last time, Trump removed the UN Ambassador from his cabinet, and made it a lower level officer. I think Biden elevated it back to cabinet level. Trump isn’t exactly in love with the UN, either, so I can’t imagine it’s a priority in his administration. Stefanik isn’t really sacrificing anything to remain in Congress. If anything, putting some distance between her and the administration, given what’s been happening the last few days, is probably a really smart move for her.

If the Smithsonian complies with that order, they are complicit. The Smithsonian was created by an act of Congress, but they are not a government agency. They do not report to any cabinet department. Most, but not all, of their employees are federal employees, but they are governed by a board of regents and a director. The sitting Vice President, the Chief Justice, and several members of Congress do sit on that board, so they have a say in what happens, but the Smithsonian does not answer to the President of the United States.

There’s a phrase that’s proving increasingly invalid just about every day now.

What I read earlier was that she had given up her former leadership position in the House as Republican Conference Chair in anticipation of getting the UN Ambassador job, and that the new conference chair isn’t planning on stepping down to give the position back to Stefanik. Most of her staff had also resigned in anticipation of being put out of a job, and she’d made arrangements to move to New York within days. So the whole debacle was a probably a significant disruption, even if her longer term career is still reasonably safe.

But now I see that Johnson just made an announcement that he’s going to create a new honorary leadership position for Stefanik to make up for it.

You omitted a word. Their voters are bigoted dumbasses.

(May be tautologocial, but still needs saying.)

@j9c re that photo… “Hey guys, if we just keep our chins stuck resolutely out, our base will think we look heroic and it will all blow over”

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said US President Donald Trump’s plans to take control of Greenland are “serious.”

He is practically goading (or is it ‘inviting’) Trump to invade Greenland.

You misunderstand.
EVERYTHING now answers to the Presitrump of the United States! (A coke to @Millie_Fink)
He treats everything as his personal fiefdom and woe betide anyone who kicks up a fuss or resists.

Of course, what the US needs right now is for everyone to resist - vocally, visibly and with action. It will piss him off, force him to make ever dumber decisions and take ever more outrageous actions, and may either precipitate the heart attack we all pray for daily or finally bring out the pitchforks.

Brussels to push ahead with enforcing digital rules on Big Tech groups but with low financial penalties for breaches

Craven cowards. Not how to react to a bully. FFS! Don’t appease, ESCALATE!
It’s the only way this fuckwit will eventually run out of road or be stopped.

Even without a leadership role and needing to hire new staff, being a member of the House is probably better for her political future than being Trump’s UN Ambassador. Ask Nikki Haley.

You definitely might be right about that, although Haley’s main career problem in today’s GOP was probably that she decided to run against Trump in the primary. That’s not something that Stefanik will ever do. (He can’t run for a 3rd term and if he seizes power to illegally become president for life he’s certainly not going to bother going through another primary.)

It’s not at all surprising that most Greenlanders are (justifiably) angry and want nothing to do with this administration, but still somewhat remarkable to me that Trump’s team can’t seem to find one single disgruntled or contrarian resident who is willing to play the part of giving token support for the takeover. That’s some excellent solidarity at work!

The whole thing is so incredibly stupid at every level. I want Greenland to be free and independent but given their tiny population and the relative wealth of the U.S. you’d think that Trump’s team might at least try pretending to play nice by offering to just buy out the entire population at a few million dollars per resident. Many would continue to decline at any price, but at a certain price point ($2M cash each? $10M?) I’d bet that the administration could claim at least some token support from the population.

Yeah I can’t even with the sarcasm here.

But, like… really dude.

The United States I grew up in cannot defend or enforce its own constitution even within borders.

It is dead and gone then.

He always does this. Takes credit for anything positive, which almost always had nothing to do with him, and any bad thing was someone else’s fault.
