The line is spoken by Dark Helmet (guess which one he is in the gif), and the joke is that it’s his attempt at “I know you are but what am I” in his great Villain speech before the climactic duel. (Also see gif for how that turned out.)
It’s the ultimate rhetorical smackdown of an angry six-year-old.
I feel this so much. I cannot understand why and how so much of the world is going fascist, as though some kind of virus is stripping people of reason and compassion. I cannot understand why anyone would want any of this or how they’re apparently fine with their heroes being insecure, stupid, lying criminals who have nothing but cruelty to offer. I cannot fathom such a huge percentage of humanity being monsters- not just misguided, ignorant or apathetic, but literal monsters devoid of every positive value that every aspect of culture, history and media has taught me since birth that all humans care about deep down. It’s inexplicable and it feels like being gaslit by the entire planet every single day.
I wouldn’t say Spaceballs is in the same league as Young Frankenstein or Blazing Saddles, but it’s a fairly enjoyable Mel Brooks take on Star Wars. And the context of the gif fits, though I can see why it might not be clear if you never saw it. It’s not smart fun, but it’s funny enough for me. YMMV.
I think you expressed it just fine, especially how this isn’t just the usual feeling like a social outcast, or the result of lingering youthful naivety. As most of the world seems to have forgotten, this is not normal. What’s happening right now is traumatic and profane on an existential level. But no, you’re not alone. There are still lots of people who haven’t lost their minds and their morals, and we all have to help and support each other.
I meant it as a joke, but if you’ve never seen the movie I can see how some very important context can be lost.
And if you’ve never seen Spaceballs, that is something you absolutely need to remedy. It is a wonderful lampooning of Star Wars and space operas in general.
David Zaslav Wants a Friendlier Relationship With Trump, Was Told to Be More Like Jeff Bezos
[…]
Suggestions provided to Zaslav, per NYMag, included a hunting and fishing show starring Donald Trump, Jr. (that’d be fascinating, given his penchant for allegedly illegal and unethical hunting tactics) and adding more pro-Trump voices to the WBD-owned CNN.

Apropos of nothing, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Melbourne, Professor Emma Johnston, just released a mid-semester “go team” all staff post.
It ends
Of utmost importance in these conversations is that all our staff and students bring diverse perspectives to university life and society. Our international students are individuals and valued members of our university community. They are learners, researchers, friends, colleagues and our future alumni. We will continue to promote and celebrate staff and student diversity precisely because it enhances our education, research, engagement, and contributions to the public good.
For those planning to travel outside of Australia, we remind you that travel conditions change regularly. We continue to work closely with our travel advisers for guidance and will keep you informed as information changes.
I’m sure those two paragraphs are entirely general, and are not meant to be rebukes or warnings of any kind.
Damn. The dictatorship is coming along nicely isn’t it? How long before he starts firing and replacing Supreme Court justices he doesn’t like? Presuming, of course, that he permits the Supreme Court to continue to exist at all.
And not just that - also to use Greenland as a free-from-consequences testing/playground for tech bros and their deregulated ‘do what you want’ “freedom cities”.
Yeah, the idea of offering UBI or other monetary bribes to Greenland’s tiny population in order to acquire the territory is probably the least-crazy thing about the whole article. Certainly less crazy than using force, or threats of force.
The vision that they laid out of building libertarian crypto-powered cities there is pure insanity though. I guess they gave up on seasteading on old cruise ships for now?
Yeah - but it’s taken the best part of half a century to actually reach terminal velocity.
Unfortunately, a majority of USians have yet to see that thing hurtling towards them or, if they have seen it, they think it’s soft and fluffy despite all evidence to the contrary.
