Beyond the content of this article, this appears to be the BBC stepping back towards reporting the war more openly. Their most senior journalists are starting to push against the government line, starting to show the restrictions that they’ve been placed under in their reporting, and push back against the systematic downplaying of the casualty numbers by pushing against the “Hamas-run health ministry” line that they were forced into in previous months.
Further down in the Guardian’s thread:
Earlier, the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC), the activist group operating the vessel, posted on Telegram, that the Madleen was “under assault in international waters.”
Quadcopters are surrounding the ship, spraying it with a white irritant substance. Communications are jammed, and disturbing sounds are being played over the radio.”
Before communication was apparently lost with the Madleen, a number of activists on board the vessel posted video and images of a white substance on the deck of the boat.
Rima Hassan, a French member of the Europena parliament, posted this image to her X account in the last hour.
Status Coup is also reporting on this right now. (I heard the initial report on their Twitch livestream and cross-checked it before posting.)
I need one of those setups that president Johnson had with multiple TVs to watch multiple things going down…
There is just so much going on right now… in a bad way.
Status Coup broke into their LA coverage to give the report on the ship, and I cross-checked it before posting here, because with everything going on I’d rather be sure of the facts than fast on the draw, ya know?
This is just the short video – in the middle of the above video – of their plea for help:
The Day I had to agree with Donald Trump.
The national press reported that Mr. Thiago Ávila, the brazilian citizen who was along Ms. Thunberg, had already been to Gaza, Iran and Lebanon, where he attended the funeral of one of the leaders of Hezbollah. A nightly news program reported that Israel intercepted the ship to prevent the delivery of weapons. This same news program regretted not having met Mr. Ávila to hear his version of events. Why was he not found by reporters?
I’m not surprised, just enraged.
We’re better off not pretending any US regime present or in my lifetime is or has been an honest broker with any desire for Palestinians to do anything other than go away or die.
That’s not a criticism of individuals or American people as a whole. These are devastating times for Palestinians, but then they have been ever since the naqba.
Agreed. And the article points out that it’s been quite a while since the US was seriously pursing the two-state solution rather than letting Israel do whatever it pleased in Palestine.
I don’t know what the outcome of this rhetorical turn will be (openly rejected a Palestinian state within what Israelis consider “theirs” and actively advocating for ethnic cleansing, etc). Especially since the rhetoric out of Europe is still primarily focused on a two-state solution based around the Green line. That’s become the “common sense” view of how we solve this issue… I don’t know what alternatives are being floated that don’t involved ethnically cleansing Palestine.
