Putin has long desired to restore the Soviet Union. Crimea and Ukraine were just the start. His end goal requires eliminating the US as a threat to those plans; with that achieved, he may be counting on Western Europe to let Putin do what he likes in the East.

(Given that it’s a BBC interview, I assume the deserter is not here in the US. Good. Under the Trump administration the deserter would be in great danger if he was here in the States. Also, Putin’s “criminal order” “shortly after the full-scale war began” to target civilians clearly eliminates the notion of civilian deaths and injuries as being accidental and collateral.)
She gave the interview in Canada, and the article says she has been living in Lithuania. Still risky, of course.
