The wild animals that live among us

found a dead woodpecker in my front yard today.
i adore woodpeckers and can pick their calls and ā€œchop chopā€ chirp over the jays, chickens and other birds. i watch them tap-tap-tapping on the electric poles on the street. i watch them fuss at the bluejays at the feeders.
i love our woodpeckers and am terribly saddened by this macabre discovery.
i politely moved the poor dear into a tiny box and interred him in a special spot, near the garden where they often dropped the peanuts we feed them.
i have always felt woodpeckers to be symbolically important. just finding a feather was a special ā€œgiftā€.
i do not know what to make of this occurrence, but it troubles me.

om mani padme hum
may they experience fortunate rebirth.

Do you just call a tiny collosal squid, a squid?

But this one is a baby and will grow up to be colossal…

From 5 eggs to 1, and I think the nest is abandoned because there’s no poo around the rim of the nest. :cry:

And, of course, the occasional affectionate nibble.

I’m thinking of getting a trail cam for a few things;
-what the hell is burrowing under the back of my house? (Bigger than a rat, and could be a skunk);
-what the hell is burrowing under the front steps at the cottage? (Rat sized burrow, but we don’t get rats that far north, as far as I know),
-and what animals stroll past my cottage when I’m not there?

The cheapest one I can find that is readily available is this one, and I can get 100 pics a month for free. The batteries last about 2 weeks.

The bunny I evicted from my garden has chosen to make a nest under the cover for my fire pit. And I’m okay with that.

Bunny will have plenty to eat until the 1st of June. Anyone need dandelions?

No Mow May?

Dandelion snack edition!

Started as laziness and a general disdain for grass, but then I got on board with no-mow-may. Letting the dandelions frow benefits me in that birds and bunnies prefer dandelions to whatever I have in my garden.

Went out to the kitchen not long after I got up, and after a minute, there was a V loud buzzing. Sounded like a bee or wasp was in the room. I stopped and looked around, saw nothing. Then I saw a bumblebee of some kind in the back door’s smol window! She was trapped between the back and screen doors!

I briefly asked The Universe to make it easy to save the bee, then waited for the buzzing to stop. I slowly opened the door, and she was on the screen door near the top. I quickly opened the screen door, and after a coupla bumps against it, she flew off.

Phew!
