Now I am curious what a military grade 8" floppy costs these days.
Yes, entirely offline and virtually unhackable. âOldâ doesnât necessarily mean âinsecure.â Often itâs the opposite. I shudder to think of what system theyâre using now.
In Dollars or Euros?
For those who have never worked with 8" floppiesâŚtheyâre the reason for the term âfloppiesâ, because they actually were: the discs were thin soft magnetized plastic and the housing was plasticized paper. By the time of the 5 1/4" disc, they had a hard plastic shell and were no longer actually floppy, but still called âfloppiesâ for old timesâ sake.
The 5 1/4" ones still had the flexible housing; it was the 3 1/2" ones that had the hard-shell case. Inside, though, it was still a flexible plastic disk.
A former colleague also disliked calling the hard-shell ones âfloppiesâ. She insisted on referring to them as âstiffiesâ.
That crashed into a hospital residence no less. What fucked up people.
Ah, yes, youâre right!
One minor consolation: this isnât Reutersâ main article. The article above is in the business section, and has a link to the full story about the humans involved. But yes, itâs sometimes hard to distinguish âbusiness newsâ from âsociopath newsâ.
Well I suppose thatâs something but it was still the one that was at the very top of the feed when I was checking the news on Google, and it wasnât under the âBusinessâ section. It was posted very shortly after word of the crash got out and it was the first mention of the crash that I saw today. I guess thatâs largely Googleâs fault but still pretty remarkable how quickly the business-minded reporters cranked out an article focusing on the impact to shareholders.
I flew back from DC last night on an Airbus A321 Neo. A 100% full flight. When we got to the gate everyone was told to remain seated while they removed the luggage from the resr of the plane. If they didnât remove the rear luggage there was a risk the plane could tip back on its tail! And so we all waited at the gate for 20 minutes until bags were unloaded.
Tail tipping has happened before.
I suppose they could have let the people in the back get off first but then that would inconvenience the first class passengers and we mustnât have that.
A faulty landing gear would certainly be enough to veer the plane off the runway after a landing. Sounds like Airbus has some gremlins to sort out.
Gremlins? Nah, Iâll just watch this one:
In Finnish 5 1/4" lerppu (floppy) and 3 1/2" korppu (rusk).
A possibly hazardous condition⌠caught.
