Um.... what.... aka, this is the dumbest thing I've ever read

What?

Okeanos is Greek, and masculine.

Ship is Germanic, and neuter.

Oven is Germanic, and masculine.

Ships are feminine because it used to be customary to name every ship after St. Mary, for safety, and because it is customary to consider vehicles and weapons feminine.

… “Women, Fire, and Dangerous Things” originally referred to gender in Dyirbal, but it works in English too.

I’m not sure where to files this story, but it’s Tucker Carlson so it’s all pretty dumb.

He recalled several unsuccessful attempts to speak on the phone with the NSA’s director, General Paul Nakasone, who he said was “highly political” and “left-wing”.

Gen Nakasone was appointed by Republican President Donald Trump in 2018.

“Did the Biden administration read my emails? NSA officials refuse to say,” said Carlson. “In a very heated follow-up conversation 20 minutes ago, they refused even to explain why they won’t answer that simple question.”

Ooooh, maybe he’ll lose his mind on the air!

I’m just imagining a really frustrated fleet commander or shipyard worker trying to give directions. “No, St. Mary, you need to pull in between the St. Mary and the St. Mary, not between the St. Mary and the St. Mary! Oh crap, another collision between the St. Mary and the St. Mary!”

My mother’s name was Mary Ellen. Full first name, no middle.

I assume it was like French Canada: all girls named Marie and and all boys named Joseph as first names, then their saint name, then finally, the third name was the name they went by at home and in the community.

Makes genealogy ever so much fun!

Caldwell says DC residents have gotten everything wrong about Trump from the Mueller probe to hydroxychloroquine.

He doesn’t go very far back, does he? I mean, there’s so many others who’ve been concerned about him for decades that don’t live in DC, am I correct?

I’m not sure I’d say this is the dumbest thing I’ve heard. Definitely irresponsible, though.

I do have to wonder at the training causing the pilots to sacrifice airspeed for altitude after just getting out of a stall. If you’re low enough that you don’t have the altitude to spend, ok, but… considering they didn’t even reach the airspeed the checklists told them to, let alone maintain it…

Well let’s say they were just dumb enough.

I think they graduated from Hold My Beer Flying Academy.

The original tweet:

I guess she meant Lord of the Flies, but other than that I can’t exactly tell what her point is. Too many rules or too few? Culture prejudice?

Apparently that not having enough rules, or not enforcing them enough, causes bullying/harassment?

Which definitely wouldn’t fit my experience. Heck, most bullies excel at bending the rules, and abusing them to cause others to get punishments…

Thanks, it makes a tiny bit of sense now.

Mine either.

And what about clothing rules? Society seems to want to sell things using sex, but gawd forbid they should teach boys to control themselves over how girls dress.

But Lord of the Flies was about how rigid school rules, hierarchies, etc. to encourage bullying… continued to encourage bullying, to the point of murder, on the island.

It’s not about “kids are violent.”

It’s about “when you teach kids to be so violent to those other kids, then they will.”
