I wonder if that’s taped right over its home.

Likely not, in my experience. The ones that burrow holes in my wood always use the bottom horizontal surface. I don’t fuss about them, since I’ve never had one bother me. I did try making a fake wasp’s nest out of a paper bag one year and hanging it in their favorite spot, as recommended on the Interwebs, but it didn’t do anything to deter them.

Bee’s antennae are great at sensing smells. I wonder if there’s an odor associated with wasps’ nests.

Fun fact: bees can see ultraviolet that we can’t, but they can’t see red like we can. So for instance red flowers are usually ones trying to attract things like hummingbirds instead. Hopefully red doesn’t change the meaning of any signs you leave out for them!

Growing up in Venezuela we had much larger carpenter bees. From memory they seemed huge, they weren’t necessarily aggressive but they would def come check you out if you were nearby to make sure you knew they were there.

Fun fact: in the US carpenter bees have no stinger. Because of this, I tell my daughter they are the bunnies of the insect world.

Another reason why I love bees. This one from a few years ago:

I love your lie, but . . . Huh?

Carpenter bees don’t sting unless provoked, but it’s still important to know how to treat a bee sting in case it happens.

Huh. I read that they didn’t have stingers, and I’ve never had one sting me over the years. I’ve picked quite a few up and interacted with them, including touching them and letting them land and walk on my body.

They’re even more like bunnies than I thought.
