Do they even know what capitalism means?
Hint: it’s called capitalism.
It means that different types of wealth, power, connections, etc. have merged into capital, so for example, nobles don’t lose title and land if they engage in commerce, and that those who hold capital run the system. In contrast to socialism where ideally everyone would run the system.
The colonial powers were investing their capital, such as the Maxim gun, to… profit… at the expense of others.
Of course they know each other. It wouldn’t be called oligarchy if there were many of them, or kakistocracy if there wasn’t their certainty that they are the best, the very best.
