Because, of course, “an American” would be blindly patriotic and uncritical of their government’s actions.
Unlike those mean, unAmeican people who won’t stand for the national anthem because they want to bring attention to people dying.
Why is more respect expected to be given to a country’s symbols than to its values?

I’m actually kind of proud of the newscasters there. Not only did they lead into each typical white question with “some people say…” or “there are people would be offended by…” they gave her the full time to speak her mind without correction and changed the questions to match the more political tone.

Oh, that’s definitely a pre-presidential-candidate move.
If she sticks to it, and pulls it off, she can use the momentum from it as evidence that she can win the same way in a Presidential run.
If she sticks to it and doesn’t pull it off, she gets a reputation for putting principles over political expediency, plus two years off to focus on her presidential run.
It’s a Xanatos gambit: no matter which way the 2018 Senate election goes, she benefits from it in the run-up to 2020.
It’s a nice move. Almost certainly a cynically measured political ploy rather than an actual deeply-held ethical position, but well-played nonetheless.

I was watching the event: he flashed that past the camera a couple of times, pausing to make sure people could see it. Biggest mistake the “sports should be non-political” crowd made was putting snowboarding in the Olympics. Snowboarders aren’t dumb, and they aren’t the type to just conform.
