Pre-Trump, I would’ve agreed. However, I think that we’re now in a post-Martian Unity era.
To repost from upthread:
The GOP is on an irretrievable march into extremism, and they know that they’ve gone so far over the edge that they would be destroyed if they were to relinquish power now.
So they aren’t going to.
Oh, I agree that they’re going to erode democracy and democratic norms as much as they can, in every way they can, to keep themselves competitive. I’d be kind of stupid not to, considering that’s what they are, and have been, doing.
But an outright abolition of even the trappings of democracy, which is what it would take to “not relinquish” power, would result in immediate civil war. And, while the GOP are firmly in control of the military, the police, and the civilian militias, they’d have some fierce opposition throughout the bureaucracy and the judiciary.
I think they’re shrewd enough to not pull the trigger on that just yet. Instead, I think, in 2020 or 2024, they’ll use the slot machine analogy within their own party, and pay out to their centrists for once in a very long time. Pretend that they didn’t collaborate and enable Trump, that he was an outlier, and that the GOP is really about fiscal responsibility, all the while humming the same racist dogwhistles under their breath. Change on the surface, to calm the tense atmosphere down, and continue with business as usual.

Good replies, though.
Sherman always did seem like a sensible sort.
Sherman puzzles me.
He accepted war as it was, he said you couldn’t refine it, and then he did refine it, winning at least as much as Grant in 1864 to 1865 while incurring far fewer casualties.
He supported slavery, and wanted the north to accept it to bring the south back into the union, but he still struck against it. And then he let Jeff Davis spoil that strike. And then he struck again promising 40 acres and a mule.
Libs across Twitter currently frantically spinning in defence of Obama, mostly on the basis of “no, we only did that to unaccompanied minors, so it’s okay”.
Suicide threat and/or attempt.
