Dammit. I’m saddened, but not surprised; familial experience, though thankfully not first-person experience, had taught me that someone who unsuccessfully attempts suicide will likely try again at some point, and I know Chelsea has tried in the past.

Poor woman. I can’t even imagine what she’s been through. I’m glad to hear that she survived.

From the perspective Kiran writes from, implying that disrespecting the US military is a bad thing is seen as defending it. She’s somewhat militantly anti-imperialist.

But the number of kids has not tripled… even if you don’t include the first part on the war on drugs (pre adoptive care act), the number rose until the mid nineties after being more than cut in half in 1977-1982 peaking at what it was befor the 1980 adoption act and dropping very slowly afterwards.

In the end, there are slightly less kids than the beginning of the war on drugs in foster care and after the 1994 crime act.

Are you looking at stats for all kids or Black kids?

It tracks for all ethnicities but Hispanic.

EDIT

From the data I can find the 40-50% rate of black to other ethnicities never changed and wasn’t tracked before the 90s.

Nothing that I noticed re: rates of change, but it does claim that Black parents and children are massively over represented in the foster care system.

If you go into dependency court in Chicago, New York, or Los Angeles without any preconceptions, you might conclude that the child welfare system is designed to monitor, regulate, and punish black mothers.51 Before the Civil Rights Movement, black children were disproportionately excluded from openly segregated child welfare services that catered mainly to white families.52 By 2000, black children made up the largest group of children in foster care.53 Black chil- dren are still grossly overrepresented in the U.S. child welfare system: Even though they represent only 15 percent of the nation’s children, black children currently compose about 30 percent of the nation’s foster care population.54 In some cities and states, the disparity is much greater.55 It is often forgotten that state agents forcibly remove most of these children and that the mothers are then intensely supervised by child welfare authorities as they comply with the agency requirements to be reunified with their children.56 This state intrusion is typically viewed as necessary to protect maltreated children from parental harm. But the need for this intervention is usually linked to poverty, racial injustice, and the state’s approach to caregiving, which addresses family economic deprivation with child removal rather than services and financial resources.57

100% agree. 40-50% of all children in the system is incredibly high representation - just like prison.

I also agree it is through public policy that it happens, and not just an unfortunate circumstance - even if it is just because of white apathy (though I think it goes beyond that).

I also think that immigration crackdowns are a big reason that the Hispanic foster care population has gone up, and no one talks about that either… well actually John McCain did, it was one of his 2008 platforms that went against the grain. I doubt he did much afterwards to follow through in the Senate.
