I’d say it’s more that the word is enemy. Deliberately otherised.
I’m reminded of the tendency of Christians to freak out about the word “Allah” without ever realising that it’s just “God” in Arabic.

Gulag is not just “prison” in Russian, of course; it comes from an old Soviet acronym. But the reason why the term is used in the West is in order to create a false distinction between their forced-labour prison camps and our forced-labour prison camps.
That’s even more so in regards to Korea; it isn’t even their acronym.
