Out of curiosity, problematic in what way? Some kinds of problems are inherent to the question, because Native groups didn’t all have fixed borders or locations. In some cases groups larger than tribes may be more or less formal.
One way to provide some general structure that I’m familiar with from ancient European history is language families, and so I appreciate maps like the following. But even at this level you can see inconsistencies.
I think this in part reflects timing; these are both supposed to be pre-European contact, but that is not a single event. For instance the Lakota lived around the Mississippi into the 1600s, then with the introduction of horses became one of various groups moving into the plains. They took the Black Hills, which became their central territory until the US seized it, in the late 1700s. By then the coasts would already be remade by European colonies.
A single map can’t show that properly. There needs to be a book of them, different snapshots of different times, as best as we can reconstruct them. If anyone ever runs into a good one, I would be interested to know.
