So that explains that.

I have read a history book that apparently decided to extrapolate inflation to ancient times. “Back then a laborer’s wages was the equivalent of just 15 cents a month, but 15 cents was enough to buy a goat and two bushels of dates…” It didn’t really help me understand.

Medieval shirts cost the equivalent of $3500 in today’s money.

Looking for something for my nephew for xmas - he’s into wild camping etc.
(I know - we used to just call it camping).
Amazon recommended this. Okay, he loves a gadget, looks fun.
Can anyone tell me what’s wrong in picture 3?

It’s not unusual for the compass to be awful on cheap products like this. If i was going to stake my life on needing to know reliably where North is i would get a nicer compass, either on its own or as part of a higher end kit.

In picture 2 there’s a little disclaimer about the compass only working correctly when the strap is unclipped, as well.

@Dogbutler I remember participating in the thread with gift recommendations for your nephew at the other place, that was fun!

“wild camping” as opposed to “glamping”, which is simply hosted airbnb in an outdoor setting with amenties like air conditioned tents, king-size beds, fireside bbq dinners with entertainment, and then some.
there is an old KOA in key largo that has started to advertise that they offer the finest “glampimg” experience in all the keys.
whatevs… to each their own level of comfort in the outdoors.

also… agree with @Grey_Devil , get a better compass, if actual backcountry orienteering is involved!

Oddly, I didn’t read that as a disclaimer, I read it as sort of “also works when”. Makes sense now.

And yes, we’ve talked about my nephew and niece and their pressies either last xmas or the one before.
They received a “Second Favourite Nephew” and “Second Favourite Niece” handmade mug respectively.

For those who didn’t witness the episode, I only have one of each.
They are good sports.

Oh, I’m not buying this for him, I’ll never see him again!

Hmm, Uncle Terry, OTOH…

I would likely simplify the purchase. You can get a paracord bracelet or belt, or bonus points if you look up how to make your own. Had a friend that would make them as gifts for friends  But as far as the other bits in the survival kit certain things should be fine going cheap, but i would get a decently priced and proven to be reliable compass. Doesn’t have to be high end.

A good hatchet or machete would be pretty good purchases too

All sound advice and appreciated.

I’ve already got him a good-quality multitool, a daypack which is good as new but I forgot to return 4 years ago (back-of-the-cupboard gift) and a big multibox of mars bars and twix etc.

This year is pretty sorted.

One more suggestion and question. Does he have knowledge of useful knots? If not a book on knots would be a pretty good buy, would go great with the paracord.
