Weird, odd stuff

Shugborough Hall in Staffordshire hired a hermit in 2002- but only for two days. He went on to become the resident hermit at Manchester Museum for 40 days in 2009.

The other very English thing about this is that the “New Street” here is at least 300 years old.

A college friend and I built a synthesizer back in the mid 1970s — he was the electronics engineering expert, while I helped with laying out circuit boards and funding. We used circuits described in the newsletter ElectroNotes published by Bernie Hutchins. I recall that some of the circuits used 555s. Not the voltage controlled oscillators though—those had to have an exponential relation between voltage and frequency and were really complex. Especially back before VCOs on a chip were developed.

Pink Panther comic strip from 1985 by Silvia Mondini.

I have never seen There Will Be Blood but this is the plot of that movie?

Also the plot of the Kuwait / Iraq War with Kuwait employing slope drilling to drill Iraqi oil with knowledge that the US would do their fighting for them. :man_shrugging:

That’s part of it, yes. Although that plot point is a late reveal, and while important it’s not part of the driving narrative. The plot of the movie can be condensed down to “people are surprised asshole oil baron is an asshole”.
