My grandfather had a sharp sense of humour. One day I asked him “I know it’s a cartoon cliché, but have you ever actually seen someone slip on a banana peel?” He replied “Yes, but you have to set it up just right.

My next door neighbour and I started doing that during COVID. Not every night, but every couple of weeks we sit in my driveway with chips and wine or cider, and chat with passersby.

This is very common in Brazilian cities too, regardless of their size. However, I think this is a custom that will eventually disappear, as I only see older people placing chairs on the sidewalks to chat or just watch life go by.

Very common in Italy too.

And in Mexican and Central American neighborhoods in Chicago.

It wasn’t at all common here before COVID; people tend to use their back gardens more than the front areas.

I’m too much of an antisocial, i’d rather be in my house doing my own thing but if i had neighbors that did this regularly i would be inclined to chat them up more often.

A side effect of this kind of thing is that when a neighbour has an issue (like the lady with dementia 3 doors up from me), or a neighbourhood (like we’ve had with full sized houses disguised as “Laneway houses”), I have personal capital with almost everybody on the street, because they stop and talk when I have my dog, or they stop and chat if we’re sitting out. And people are more likely to open their doors if we’re trying to help someone, or help the neighbourhood in genera.

I do think that there are more benefits to socializing and having a good relationship with neighbors. We’re inherently social creatures and studies show that people that live longer has less to do with diet and more to do with social bonds. I’m just more comfortable doing my own thing, but I am trying to break out of my antisocial habits… it’s just been hard :stuck_out_tongue:

I guess I’m what they call a social introvert; I need lots of time alone to recharge, but I can enjoy time with other people, and it took a long time, but I finally got the hang of small talk. I also have agoraphobia, so sometimes I do have to force myself to get out, so I understand your reluctance!
