Well, fuck

On my way to the airport and the driver wanted to make small-talk:

“So you have had a few layoffs at work I heard”

“yeah we had a few. Could have been worse”

“Well maybe with Trump coming in that will change now”

WTF. The driver is also an immigrant like me. That change you’re looking for won’t be the change you want buddy.

I think I’m going to get that anti microbial vegetable wash I used in Mexico. I think it SOP for folks there? Maybe @knoxblox can chime in?

Yes, it’s available. I need to go to Smart & Final here in TJ tomorrow or Tuesday, so I’ll try to remember to look for a name and ingredients list.

Wildfires increasing due in part to global warming, so lets chop down the carbon sinks and burn the scraps, while maybe killing endangered species to boot!

I’ll look into the change of the plan itself. If it still bans clearcuts and harvest of old growth trees, it could be an OK plan. The trick is avoiding harvest of trees >90 years old. Establishing areas with younger trees for regenerative harvest could actually be following the climate science.

Like Uber, but with guns: New rideshare with armed drivers is coming to 3 Texas cities
BlackWolf is expanding into Dallas, Austin and Houston, Texas by the start of 2025. Like Uber and Lyft, BlackWolf takes users to their destinations, but offers them armed drivers if they want.

According to the BlackWolf website, the rideshare only hires drivers with at least four years of military, law enforcement and/or security experience. Armed drivers must meet additional qualifications, such as an active security license in the state where they operate.

Isn’t that the sort of service you only need in failed states?

And now it makes more sense…

I am constantly surprised by the women I know personally (and they are the majority afaict here) who are like “ah yes I think I will be safer in here alone with an armed ex cop!”

I very much want to stop short of victim blaming though so I’ll frame it from the other side maybe? Like, everything in a business like this, which is basically a private security service, depends on the vetting and screening of the drivers and that costs a lot of money. Actual PDs have trouble keeping straight up serial rapists off their teams as it is.

I know Stockholm Syndrome has been debunked to some degree, but there is something to the idea that when you’ve been steeped in the beliefs of your captors for long enough, it starts being believable because that’s all you’re hearing anymore.

I fail to see the selling point here. What exactly is the gun supposed to defend against, other than the passenger themself? Is Texas full of Mad Max gangs that try to actively hijack rideshare cars while they’re driving? If you get dropped off in a dangerous area and then the car leaves to go pick up the next passenger, what difference is that gun supposed to make? Apparently the gun worship has gotten so fervent that potential customers believe the gun’s magic aura will protect them in some lingering way, I guess? I can’t see any other justification for “Uber, except the driver can kill you easier”.
