has said he had to cancel a concert in Canada after the country’s largest airline denied his pre-booked seat for his cello.
That explains why so many people in my immediate social circle use it…
Um… okay. Not sure what that has to do with what I was talking about, about how tumblr was kind of too weird to be commoditized in the same way other social media platforms have been…
Just kind of a “well, fuck: it’s as weird around my house as I suspect it to be.” Sorry, no deeper meaning there. The resistance to commodification of that is reassuring, though, on some level.
The resistance to commercialization of Tumblr has been the topic of lengthy expositions by one of my kids, who hangs out there with fellow lovers of early renaissance Italian poets.
Time to tell this story again:
In his early career, Yo Yo Ma used British Airways a lot, and had a deal with them (maybe other airlines too, but this is from the person at BA who did his bookings) to book 2 adjoining seats, and if the plane was full, he paid for both, but if it wasn’t, his cello rode for free.
How does Lang Lang deal with this sort of thing?
The biggie is harps. Pianos, you request the brand you want and hope (if you’re not Lang Lang level). But a harp, you usually have to bring your own, and not only are they heavy AND fragile but they have to be tuned every single time you transport them.

Dozens of luxury condos, hotels in Miami sinking at ‘unexpected’ rates, new study reveals
Darn!
I seem to recall a decade or two ago the state of Florida made it unlawful to mention climate change in documents that assessed real estate. So as your quote suggests: “unexpected” is only the right word if they add who didn’t expect it. I mean, it’s sand and rising water…
As for the rate - 3 inches of sinking six years is enough to make every civil engineer in the room wince. I’m going to assume it’s steady or accelerating, since the driving forces aren’t slowing down.
And gear like, for example, a Hammond B3. Bulky, around 200 kg without the Leslie. Surprisingly suspectible to changes in temperature and humidity.
The “funny” thing about the attempts to cash in on Tumblr was how solidly Yahoo/Verizon shot themselves in the foot while trying to do it. One of the first things they did was try to kick out anything with adult content, especially images. There was a lot of traffic on Tumblr in 2015, so of course they turned to that worst of solutions, AI. The AI would identify a post as “adult content,” flag it, and … well, that was it, really. Trying to appeal was pointless as what little human oversight they had was overwhelmed. So when your post with a picture of bread got flagged for nudity, there wasn’t really much to do about it.
This also affected discussions of sexuality, queer content of a non-prurient nature, health information (e.g., breast cancer discussions), and a whole range of other collateral targets. Of course it simultaneously did almost nothing to counter the port bots, but it killed the communities of willing participants of porn. The user based dropped about 90% and the place became a ghost town for several years.
Enshitification powers activate!
It’s gotten back to being better, but it’s still a shell of what it once was, and yeah, the porn bots are still there. The site is still weird, but it is also infested with RWNJ accounts, and there’s still a very guarded atmosphere.
Just about how recycling works at my office. I’m not 100% sure if we truly recycle* but there’s been a few times i’ve seen the cleaning ladies dump both the trash bins and paper/recycling bins into the same trash can they wheel around when tidying up.
*I know we’re supposed to because they’ve had discussions before about properly sorting recycling but in execution i don’t know if they’re really recycling
They sure aren’t recycling plastic.
Do you just have all of your trashable plastic sent to the landfill? I’m often tempted.
