What are you listening to: PodCast Edition!

Joe Pera’s new season of Drifting Off starts on Monday. It’s a podcast that can be used as a sedative before bed, but it’s also Joe Pera and has his weird and wonderful humor sprinkled throughout like seasoning in a soup (I just listened to S1E1, it’s about soup).

I found out about it because I was looking for the episode of his TV show about fish fry (happy Friday everyone). I didn’t find that because I got sidetracked by all of the other Joe Pera news, like the new season of his podcast. And this article about casting his Nana in the TV show by talking to ladies at fish frys in Milwaukee.

It’s from six and a half years ago, but maybe you haven’t read it. I hadn’t until today. I guess I should try harder to keep up on Joe Pera news.

I had someone explaining to me at a music festival last week why this podcast was the work of a skeptic; how the researchers had been persecuted for their work; how we’d have to change all our thinking etc etc. And all the while, all I could think was this does provide a shitload of evidence; not for telepathy, but for our ongoing epistemic crisis, like we needed anymore evidence.

It was nice to see a recognition in the review that these aren’t victimless crimes:

The worst part of this story is what is happening to the parents and to their children. It’s easy—and necessary—to highlight what Ky Dickens got wrong in her reporting. It’s harder—and it borders on the cruel—to place any blame at the foot of the parents of these children. They were told that their child might never speak or have a normal life. Then came along a narrative that flipped the script: their child was actually profoundly special and could communicate in a way they had never thought possible. From being considered disabled, their child was suddenly humanity’s saviour. Wouldn’t you want to believe that as well?

NEW YORK (AP) — Disgraced former congressman George Santos has asked a New York judge to delay his sentencing on federal fraud charges until the summer so he can pay off more than half a million dollars in fines by making more episodes of his recently launched podcast “Pants on Fire.”

Listening to Ep 148 of You Are Not So Smart - Rule Makers & Rule Breakers. There’s some really interesting information in relation to some of the tribalism, decision making, rules and culture of a given group, region, etc. My thoughts based on what i’ve listened to are that society tends to fall under “loose” or “tight” cultures, where in one people might have more freedom and in others people are scrutinized and controlled more. This can be driven by uncertainty, outside threats, etc. and people’s inclination of moving towards less freedom is often due to a desire for stability even if ultimately they will be unhappy under a stricter regime.

The episode was quite interesting and its given me something new to consider when looking at the state of things.

:smiling_face_with_tear: another podcast i love ended its run in Oct last year (Oh No Ross & Carrie). I had caught up around early October and jumped over to another one to catch up there as well, and today i noticed that ONRAC had released a single episode in the time i hadn’t listened to it and it was a short farewell. Seems like something major happened to one of the hosts, hope they’re ok

I’m still sad about that one. The awkward, sudden way it ended and the hosts recording separate goodbye messages left a lot of people speculating that the hosts themselves had some kind of falling out, but nobody knows for sure. All I know is that it was a horrible way for a beloved 13 year old podcast to end, and while Ross said he’d be moving on to new projects, I haven’t heard a single peep from him since ONRAC ended.

It was very sad to find out for me today. I’ll have to look around for something to replace it, just not sure what type of podcast i want to sub in
