Whatcha Watchin'?

And Mobious strippers, they never show their backsides.

This is the Morbius I grew up with, being a faithful fan of Marvel merriment:

I have not seen that one, so I will not look at your spoiler!

I thought that Watermelon Woman looked interesting too. I have not seen anything by Dunye, so I’ll have to check her out sometime.

I got tired of Ozark and stopped watching mid 2nd season. I love Laura Linney but she just wasn’t in it enough or her character interesting enough to get me absorbed in the show. It seemed like such a blatant rip off of Breaking Bad. I guess if it were doing its own cool spin on it I’d be more excited, but it seemed so derivative. Let me know if it got better. I might try it again. It wasn’t terrible.

She become a lot more central in the last couple of seasons. She ends up becoming the driving force of almost everything that they’re doing with the cartel, for good or ill. She makes questionable choices, but driven by getting her family out of the horrific situation that Marty put them in.

In a lot of ways it is but just more ā€œsouthernā€ (though is Missouri the south?), but rather than just focusing on the one spouse (Walt in the case of BB), it focuses on both of them, as they both become deeply involved in laundering for the cartel.

I was not entirely happy with how it turned out for Ruth, but it’s worth watching.

FYI - this are pretty light spoilers, I don’t say anything specific that happens just say some general trends regarding Wendy, but figured I’d spoiler tag them anyways.

last night watched Belfast. Enjoyed it, but couldn’t say it was a happy ending.

Thank you for the judicious use of spoilers. This is one of those that my family started watching and then stopped because some of us felt that everyone had become to hard to relate to.

It’s on my list to watch on my own time because idgaf if I can relate to any/everyone, a good story is a good story. And that’s exactly what it was shaping up to be.

From what I have seen, I’d say it’s a good bit more ā€˜southern gothic’ than Breaking Bad. These are outsiders, coming into an area where everyone has roots going back way into the past. And both the people and the general environment have a lot of history. And these outsiders are kinda wedging themselves into that.

I’m really looking forward to a rewatch, all the way through.

Hmmmm…I guess if I’m bored I’ll pick it back up again.

I kept waiting for it to find its own rhythm and maybe push away from its Breaking Bad Inspiration. Lately, I’ve gotten tired of these shows that try to get me to root on horrible people. I guess it’s fun from a writer’s perspective, but it’s emotionally draining to root for people who are sociopaths. I feel like if I want a crime show, I’d rather do something like a heist which is more fun.

Yeah, the anti-hero thing is wearing a bit thin, isn’t it. It might not be the right show for you, then. Although, they do give you other people to root for…

We’re getting a modern Joanna Constantine because John Constantine is getting a series treatment on HBO…

I have lately been watching Stranger Things 4 - it’s okay. The Steve Harrington character is the exact guy I’d have crushed on when I was in high school in the 80’s, and that is really the fun of watching it for me. The monsters are brutal and it seems overly violent. There’s still enough clever 80’s references and I like how they use Matthew Modine, Winona Ryder, and Paul Reiser, who are all actors I really like and who I think have a unique place in the 80’s world. The plot is getting convoluted.

I also have been watching Gilded Age, which I absolutely love. The characters are a ton of fun and the fashion is amazing. It’s silly and frivolous and has that upstairs/downstairs stuff going on that is always fun to watch.

The other show we’ve been into at my house is Shining Girls with Elizabeth Moss. I always enjoy watching her. The time travel stuff is pretty well done, and the mystery of what is happening is revealed bit by bit. It’s also really dark, though, and I think I’m ready for something more fluffy.

We have not started that yet… we’re gonna wait until the second half is up, I think… Of course, everyone is talking about how ā€œRunning Up That Hillā€ was on an episode and now it’s in the top 10 on the US charts!

FINALLY, I am hipper than the kids are!!!

Also, still waiting to hear the Big Boi song with Kate Bush on it…

We’re watching Mr. Robot right now, partway through the first season… so far, so interesting. We also just watched an old Doctor Who that had been lost but was animated called Galaxy 4. It was from a late part of the Hartnell years, and you can tell he was absolutely struggling to do the role properly. It’s kind of sad.

Seconded. It’s also so very funny. Agreed also that the acting is fantastic, and I especially want to point out how good Ke Huy Quan is. He’s the emotional core of the film in my opinion.

In my limited experience, outside of Kansas City and St. Louis, yes to varying degrees.

Edit: I was probably too lenient on the cities.

And it’s part of the South, too.

i lived in MO for a decade, and went to school in southern MO. i’d say that the southern part of the state very much has a ā€œsouthā€ vibe, while STL is more like a belly button, above the belt line, and thus has blend of northern midwestern and southern attitudes. Northern MO starts feeling more midwestern proper to me. and yeah, cities vs rural attitudes in general are also in the mix.

I enjoyed it a lot. I appreciate movies that take a risk. Also, Michelle Yeoh. She is perfection.

My dad was from Neosho, MO. It is sort of Southern feeling, but it’s definitely its own thing. But, I think that sense of isolation and a small group that is dependent upon each other is there; not easy for an outsider to fit in.
