Whatcha Watchin'?

That’s a fair criticism, but some stories work best when it is focused in its scope. Others work better when it looks at a broader picture. For a biopic i would imagine that a more focused story telling and focusing on the family makes sense. But also hopefully this movie will allow for more diverse Brazilian voices to be heard on the global stage, i really hope so

I agree with you. Making a didactic film or showing more and more of the fight against the dictatorship would not be good. The drama of the widow and family lost in the labyrinth of bureaucracy and fear of dictators was well explored.

Most of the people who are criticizing it are not talking about the film itself, but about the protagonism of certain sectors of the national left. A necessary criticism, but it is out of place and sometimes seems like a mental repression.

To me it comes across as a valid opinion but one that ultimately distracts and divides. Yes, giving more representation to other people (especially marginalized groups) is highly important. But weighing people’s suffering against each other isn’t constructive in my opinion. Which is why i hope that this movie’s success allows for others to tell other important stories.

After tomorrow, I will be switching to Christmas mode. I refuse to start before Thanksgiving, which is my favorite holiday. It is normally the one holiday/gathering with my wife’s family where they are not arguing or comparing who brought what for whom, but I highly expect politics will flare up tomorrow.

One of my new favorite Christmas movies/shows is the Guardians Christmas Special, which is far better than it has the right to be. Besides really enjoyable and silly acting from everyone, it also has two really good songs in it. Links below so you can enjoy.

What are folks’ fave xmas movies? I have a few. If i had to narrow it down to just one i would say National Lampoon’s Xmas Vacation is the one that me and my fam quote and make references to all the time.

Huh, never knew this was even a thing! I love just how much random Jim Henson stuff is out there. I’m still finding stuff i’ve never heard of

Muppet Christmas Carol, full stop. Nothing else comes close. Not just great Muppet stuff but Michael Caine absolutely plays his part all the way. Also has several killer songs, including one you have to hunt for. My favorite is the earliest one in the movie, One More Sleep Til Chrismas.

Second is the How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Short, hilarious, poignant, and timeless. I’ve enjoyed showing it to three generations of children so far.

After that, there’s a lot of good ones. Two years ago was the first time I watched Scrooged and I cannot believe I missed this before. My favorite part was Carol Kane’s part. It’s just amazing.

Scrooged was one that i really wanted to mention but i kept my post to a single movie (foolishly). It’s a fun take on the story, and the acting and comedy is great.

Fun fact: Bill Murray’s final monologue was not in the script. When screenwriter Michael O’Donoghue saw Murray suddenly throw it out there during shooting, he thought Murray was having a nervous breakdown.

Muppet Christmas Catol - excellent in every way. Gonzo rules as the narrator.

Scrooged - fine overall, but the ending just drags on and on and on and on…

The one Jim Henson Christmas special that kind of messed me up as a kid was The Christmas Toy from 1987. It’s a very similar plot to Toy Story, complete with a main character who’s afraid he isn’t going to be his kid’s favorite anymore after the arrival of a new space-themed action figure that doesn’t realize it’s a toy.

The part that disturbed me was that by the rules of this particular “toys are sentient beings who come to life when humans aren’t watching” universe, any toy that is spotted out of place from where the humans last left it is “frozen” in a kind of living death and henceforth unable to return to life. So not only does that mean every child is effectively a gorgon when it comes to their most beloved toys, it also means that toys are regularly forced to watch as said children continue to play with the corpses of their former companions. So kind of a horror story disguised as a heartwarming family holiday movie.
