Truth be told, I’d totally watch it.

Fucking hell! Puts Bergman in perspective when he’d work with Trier but Bergman was too big of an arsehole!

Is there a problem with Joachim Trier? I know that Lars Von Trier is a complete and total jackass, but I don’t know much about Joachim Trier?

Sorry my mistake!

Also Lars just added the Von to his name as an affectation to sound more German for…. some reason. I never give him the respect of his pretension.

Joachim is of course The Worst Person in the World.

I had to look it up, too… I am not sure I’ve seen any films by him? I’ve seen a couple by Lars Trier, though, to my sadness. :sob:

The worst person in the world was a big success. A romcom that I really enjoyed.

Romcoms are tough sells for my family! I’ll have to try and cajole them!

Well, he didn’t pull that out of thin air. That’s is likely a name used by the people he presumed to be his ancestors. (He is actually the result of an extramarital affair, but he didn’t know when he picked the name.) The Triers were a Jewish family from, well, Trier in Germany. Before surnames as we know them today became universal and regulated in Germany, names in the form of “von” (“of”) place name were very common among people who did not have any other surname, like many Jews, or were not allowed to use their family’s, like sex workers. The association of the “von” with nobility is in origin just a special case of that.

Just got back from seeing Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger… excellent film! The last one that Ray Harryhausen animated solo! Had a tragic Baboon storyline…

Evil villaness working to make her son Caliph!

It had Patrick Troughton and a young Jane Seymour!

Tasty tasty cheese corn!

I distinctly remember seeing it that summer, in between (or before?) watching Stay Wars 27 times. The actor for Sinbad was lame but It was really wonderful to see the Harryhausen stuff on the big screen. I thought the animation of the baboon was fantastic.

The part where Zenobia runs out of elixir and gets stuck with a bird foot freaked me out.

Maryanne watches Hallmark movies almost all day. Every day. More power to her, but my God . . . they’re the wish dot com version of rom coms. They’re not as bad as they used to be, though. So there’s that.

It’s really good. The main character is infuriating and self sabotaging and relatable.

I’ve probably recommended this before:

And her most recent film I loved:

Though it has nothing to do with romantic comedies!

I loved the Sinbad movies as a kid. The stop-motion animation was excellent and the stories were always engaging.

It was excellent… yeah, when he talked about the movie, Morte mentioned it was released a month after Star Wars, so it sort of ended up buried… but it’s excellent!

We all laughed! Served her right!

You should totally start MS3King it whenever you’re in the room with her…

Will put it on my list of films to check out at some point, then! Thanks for the recs!

Harryhausen ruled!

I used to watch them with her, but she got annoyed with me because I kept accurately predicting what was going to happen next. The movies seriously have gotten much better, but they are still very formulaic and predictable. What they have ditched are the ideas that (a) women will be happier at home making a family than having a career outside the home, (b) that small town life is always objectively better than big city life, and (c) the only time single women are allowed to have young children is if their husband died. That third one used to kill me. It was so obvious. Single men with children were sometimes divorced, and sometimes were widowers. But single women with children were always widowed. It was such a weird double standard. They also have slightly more representation than they used to. There have been a few where the principles were Black, a few more where they were Hispanic, and a couple interracial, but I think those have all been white/Hispanic, although I could be wrong. It killed me about 2 years ago there were a whole bunch starring this Hispanic actor where you could tell the casting director said, “Get me a Pedro Pascal type actor.”
