yes, that is Teapot Duck (1998) from mum’s sculptures called “Zootensils” (1998-2000) a series of constructions using everyday items from the kitchen. others include the teapot bird next to it, as well as bugs and other creatures.
beneath a “whimsical” appearance, the commentary looks into women’s role in the household and the biases that underlay the notion of “women’s work”.
the series was showcased in a solo show at the Artists Unlimited galley, downtown Tampa, Florida in May, 2000. here are some pics from that show:
Very nice, thanks for sharing!
I’ve long had the idea of branching into sculpture with household objects, and your mum’s work is inspiring! Can you share any tips about connecting the pieces? Does she weld them together? Wire? Any details much appreciated.
Oh, that’s obviously nothing. As in it will sometimes appear in reflection but if you look for the actual object causing the image there won’t ever be anything there. Like a vampire but the opposite direction. So nothing to worry about.
The assignment was to sculpt a piece of clothing or shoe in clay. I’d forgotten about the requirement to bring something that day, so I pulled off my sweater and piled it up. Then I did sketches and stored the crumpled sweater on top of a cabinet for a while. It turned out very abstract
I’d roll out slabs of clay to the appropriate thickness and carefully fold them and join them. It took some experimentation to discover the thickness that allowed folding without breaking. I propped up folds with crumpled newspaper. It was a little frustrating because I’d easily fall into the flow while working on it but only ever had an hour to work at a time. I was late to my next class several times!
My teacher liked it so much after firing that she offered her expensive glaze for it. It was great to walk into class after the second firing to find it on prominent display with a crowd around it.
Took longer to do because 1 - I changed the way I was loudness leveling, the batch process was no good and I ended up having to run every track one at a time through a meter in real time to get it accurate, and 2 - 1983 was a huge year for synth-pop 12" releases and I ended up having to split it into two volumes of two hours each. I’m still working on Volume Four ('83 part 2) but maybe in a couple of weeks…

posting this here, because i was working on a post card, when i received a post card! burning the text plate for the next card on the laser engraver, using LightBurn software on my crappy HP laptop, then - this beauty arrived:
@MrShiv has been Going Places and sends a mermaid (or three) from Great Falls, Montana! so cool!
to answer your question, Shiv, yes there are many mermaids in the Conch Republic, as one might expect. very good to see they are all the way in Montana, where i hope the water is to their liking.

eta: the stamp is most appropriate! nice touch, sir!
E2: just to be clear, the card arrived by post. didn’t just appear on the screen!
Ok, running into a few problems with the table top. Some of the places with really nice grain are not taking finish well. They are essentially end grain within the face grain, so they just soak up the finish. I tried adding extra finish to those areas to soak in, but it’s insatiable.
Another thing I attempted was to put some waxy board butter in between varnish coats, so we’ll see if that helps. I’m open to suggestions.
I have occasionally used sanding sealer for porous wood in models. Would that be overkill, or ruin the finish? Could be it’s only meant for surfaces to be painted.
