What's in a name?

Boink. As in yoink.

…Wonder how much of a dip in traffic there’s been at the other place?

Well, I’m still popping over there as well, but mostly for the group PM conversations that are happening.

I can see me still looking in over there, but less and less as time goes on. It’s a shame really - after they buggered up the main site so badly a few years back, the BBS was the only user-friendly part left. Now user friendly is the last way it could be described :unamused:

The good ship Queen CZAnne’s Revenge?

Walloping_Window_Blind.net?

I think the HMS idea is fun. I like the analogy of us setting sail (on something barely sea-worthy) to explore uncharted lands. I like that it alludes to our past, but doesn’t weigh us down. Also, as long as it’s just an acronym that means nothing, there’s no trademark issues.

So I’m interested in seeing more suggestions that start with HMS. I don’t think we need to only reference historical ships though - we make our own ship! Something inspiring and noble sounding;

HMS Reflection
HMS Acuity
HMS Remarkable
HMS Acumen
HMS Reckoning
HMS Prudence

Or we could go a sillier direction;
HMS Rolleyes
HMS Dafuq
HMS IMHO
HMS Facepalm
HMS FTFY

On a completely different note, though, I also have a name that I had reserved awhile ago for a similar purpose;

Commentariat Collective
I have the .com, .org and .net of that, as well as

Commentariat.co

I will only go with something of the Boaty McBoatface variety if it means we all agree to call the other The Author Ship.

So how about Her Majesty Pile-Driver Paula’s Mutant Space The Remarkable Boink-Pirate Adhocratic Speakeasy of Eden?

That way I think everyone’s happy.

It’s a bit much for this anglophobic colonist, too. But as long as I read it as Happy Mutant Space, I feel ok. :relieved:

Is there any way we can fit Banana or Rob Ford in there?

Just Look At HMPDPMS The Remarkable etc.?

Maybe we should start a thread about Rob Ford.

Wandering Mutant Society?

[edit] Heh, wanderingmutants.social appears to be free.

Don’t name it after me. I don’t deserve it.

Also, though I tend rationalist, I have just enough animism in my hindbrain to see that as a curse. I have a … erm… complicated relationship with water not for immediate consumption. The reason I’m good at plumbing is not because I enjoy it, and the reason I now live on a mountain, more than 1000 miles from the closest beach, is not entirely because I got a good research gig.

I like that a lot more than the nautical theme. It makes sense for the site’s name to reflect, in some way, what’s unique about its structure and organization.

I’ve also been thinking in terms of:

1.) Learned societies, secret clubs, public fora of antiquity
2.) Absurdist names that add flavor but not specificity
3.) Out-groups besides mutants (there’s a site called “Dangerous Minds” - something like that)
4.) Lost or hidden places; words that evoke curiosity by themselves (like “hieroglyphics” and “caligari”)

The most important criteria for me is how well the name would stimulate the interest of a hypothetical outsider. For this reason, I’d argue that lounge/cafe based names need something extra to avoid feeling generic (caligari.cafe is available).

I got nothing. Ooo, wait. Numbers Station? Nah, still got nothing. Carry on.

That’s definitely thinking in the right direction.
