It has now been estimated that the number of women who have experienced TBI secondary to domestic violence is 11-12 times greater than the number of TBIs experienced by military personnel and athletes combined.
Up to 90% of domestic violence survivors have experienced some form of head trauma.
I generally dislike the idea of doxxing, but as a public service the name. address, and all personal details of the doctor(s) involved should be widely known.
I hope the ACLU or some other group gets in touch with that woman. To me, that is pretty clearly discrimination based on sex (because I doubt very seriously that they would deny medical care to the father for the same reason), which would subject that law to intermediate scrutiny, and I don’t think it survives a Constitutional check under that standard of review.
Also, we really need to get serious about getting an Equal Rights Amendment ratified. I know, there’s one already out there that arguably is, but SCOTUS is never going to recognize that, so write a new one and get to work getting it ratified. Please. That would subject laws like this to a strict scrutiny standard of review, and they would almost certainly fail on that basis of review. Also, a new ERA could be written to explicitly include sexual orientation and gender identity, providing additional protections for the LGBTQ+ community.
In particular, the number of extramarital affairs and premarital sexual partners the doctor had should be highlighted. While leaving the names of these partners confidential, of course. None of them deserve the shame of being associated with him.
I guess we will need a lot of immigration to maintain the workforce. Wait a minute…
Or, you know, socialism to make having kids more attractive.
Amen. When having a kid risks bankruptcy, and every penny from your second job goes to pay the daycare, it is tough to make motherhood attractive, man. Was just talking to a colleague that this is really not good for our profession! He pointed out that it was way worse for the colleges. I begin to wonder if this is not just the perfect storm.
I saw a story about summer camp debt making the rounds this morning. Here’s an example:
Small correction. I would love another kid, but I also don’t want to work until I’m 90 to be able to afford to.
Summer camp is frickin’ expensive. One week of Camp cost me as much as a month of pre- and after-care. It was amazing how much money I had left once the kids outgrew camp. The only thing that kept me from going into debt was dependent care FSA.
I’m positive that this is the number one reason why my parents never let us go to summer camp. Too expensive for a family of seven.
We did have a very basic cabin in Kings Canyon NP that we owned with another family. My parents sold their interest when I was 7 or 8, and they put the money toward a college fund for the five of us.
Girl Scout camp for the win! (And, I presume, Boy Scout camp as well.)
Cheaper than anything else one might do with a kid for a couple of weeks in the summer, at least back in the Stone Age when I was young.
Honestly I was an only child and thought summer camp was just one of those “TV family subplots.”
Right? My parents never even considered it. I’m sure they thought it would be a waste of money they didn’t have.
Yeah, my parents sent the three of us to a local day camp during the summer exactly once. After that, we were at home every summer.
I did that, too - but it was just occasional weekend glamping for kids (we camped in a log cabin with running water and electricity, not in tents). Also there were no bears in those woods, just deer and smaller critters.
When I was older, two things made me very glad my parents were too broke to send us anywhere for an entire summer - fictional horror movies with sleepaway camp settings, and real life horror stories about some of the adults at those camps.
I should amend my comment. I think my three brothers went to the Boy Scouts National Jamboree at least twice (ID and AK) and camped. However, I think the cost of these trips was mostly the transportation, and I’m thinking that there was some fundraising to help out.
Yep, it was probably 1969 and 1970 for them.
