Yes, this is true. The jihadist group that appears to be leading this attack grew out of the Syrian branch of Al-Qaida, and we’re widely regarded as a terrorist group.
The factions in the Syria civil war are complex, but the various rebels can largely be split into three groups - Sunni Islamist extremists backed by Turkey and the Gulf Monarchies, which are the dominant group in the current attacks, Kurdish and allied forces in the north east, who have been backed by various powers over the course of the civil war, and who were attacked by Turkey when they invaded northern Syria. And in the south there are western aligned rebel groups, in the area surrounding the base that the USA has been maintaining in Syria
