And yet no words about who paid for this coup attempt.

Without the ceremonial mace the House cannot be in session and, historically…
Thanks for the larger context!
The arrest list also included the leader of the main opposition Democratic Party, Lee Jae-myung, as well as three opposition lawmakers, the National Intelligence Service deputy director said.
The president tried to “use this chance to arrest them and wipe them out”, said director Hong Jang-won.
The revelation came as the country’s political parties held emergency meetings throughout Friday, with MPs planning to bring a vote to impeach Yoon. The motion, which is scheduled for Saturday, will pass if two-thirds of MPs vote for it.
Judges of the Constitutional Court said they had received requests to annul the result, citing intelligence documents that were declassified this week detailing allegations of Russian influence on social media.
Syrian rebels close in on Damascus as presidency denies Assad has left capital
Well, this was quick… I don’t know if this was on anyone’s bingo cards for an end of the year event in world politics…
Given what happened to the Yazidis and other minorities in Syria the last time the jihadists advanced, we could be seeing another genocide before the year ends.
They keep saying on stories about them taking territory that these guys (the ones leading the force, as a I believe it’s a coalition of different groups?) are trying to shed their jihadist ideology for a more inclusive framing. There is certainly plenty of historical precedence in Islamic history around concepts of tolerance and inclusion. So, I hope that’s correct. Syria is an ancient place, and as such, it’s a diverse place. That should be priority one for anyone in charge, ensuring that diversity doesn’t become stamped out over some twisted theology.
Either way, Assad certainly isn’t the “good guy” here… not that you were saying that, but just that this had to be expected at some point, given that he has much less support from Iran and Russia right now. And he’s spent this entire conflict just really brutalizing the opposition against him.
Gunfire has been reported in the centre of the Syrian capital Damascus as rebels opposed to the rule of President Bashar al-Assad continue their lightning offensive across the country
Reports say that Assad has left Damascus by plane for an unknown destination
Unverified footage shared on social media shows thousands of inmates have been freed from the notorious Saydnaya prison - where Assad’s opponents were tortured and executed
The rebels advance on Damascus comes after they said they had “fully liberated” the city of Homs
‘Tyrant’ Assad has fled, Syria is free - rebels
Rebel forces have declared Syria “free”, saying the “tyrant” President Bashar al-Assad has left.
It is the end of a dark era and the beginning of a new one, HTS says on Telegram.
People who were displaced or were imprisoned by the Assad regime’s half-century reign can now come home, the rebels say.
It will be a “new Syria” where “everyone lives in peace and justice prevails”, HTS says.

From The Bugle, Episode 187, Mar 16, 2012
Reuters is just now reporting that a plane took off from Damascus, was tracked headed for the coast, then turned around and a couple of minutes later disappeared from the radar.
Current theory is that al-Assad was on that plane, and a lot of people are very interested in finding what is presumed to be the wreckage.
But not forgotten!
He’s such an asshole. I do hope a trip to The Hague is in the cards now.
Moscow’s devastating aerial campaigns against rebel positions helped the Syrian Army regain swaths of territory and keep Assad in power.
Bombing population centers was also a major cause of the flood of Syria refugees. Putin uses refugees as a weapon to stress western democracies, and it gave Trump a needed boost to climb out of his primary hole in 2016.
Reminds me of an (I think underexamined) shittiness, those busloads of migrants that Republicans shipped to Democrat-led cities. For one thing, it seemed like they were trying to fuel a crisis so they had more to point to as a supposed problem.
I’ve read that, some time ago, these Syrian rebels were called terrorists by western powers. Is It true?
